Aftermarket A-Arms wont fit spindles?

Recommended Posts

I guess this is a big issue with some a-arms that dont fit your spindles how do i fix this problem? I have taken it to a few shops and all say they cant do it because its tapered and if they could it would take a couple hours so im looking at $200+

I have no clue what a-arms they are, bought them off ebay but they are +2 +1

the spindles need to be reamed (i.e. remove the taper). ive always wondered how hard this was. it seems that since the spindles are just plain steel you could just buy the proper size of bit and do a little drillin at home. but maybe its more complicated than that.

I had the same problem with the used Denton arms I bought. I called them and they told me to drill it out and then use a snap-on brand tapered reamer. I ended up buying the spindles from the same guy I bought the a-arms from. However, my buddy went to Burgard arms and a local shop charged him $40 to drill and ream his spindles.

so just find a local machine shop? Ive been going to motorcycle shops.

I need a metal/machine shop?

You could also go to a Home Depot or your local hardware and purchase a 1" reammer for around 30.00. That is what I did and it worked fine.

I would check the size of the taper. Be realy carefull of the type of reamer you buy. We use them at work, and buy them from Greenlee/Lenox/Milwuakie, and we call them Step bits. Some of them don't allowe much room between the increments of sizes, and it can be hard to drill through very thick metal>

Here is a link to a site that lists several type of step bits

Click on the link, then go to page 41

Don't try to do it yourself. If you get the taper wrong then the nut may come loose while riding. I'd hate to have a spindle separate from the A-arm while blasting down a trail :whoa: . Rod is right, Jenssen will ream them. They do it for free if you buy their A-arms, but I'm sure they will charge you a small fee. They turned mine around in just a few days.

I had to ream out the spindles on my raptor when I put on my Burgard a-arms on it. I went to Oreilly Auto parts and got one it was around 25 or 30 bucks.I just put the spindles in a vise put the reamer in a drill and reamed them out just take it slow and keep checking the fit of the ball joint. It only took about half an hour.
