4strokesblow
Alright I'm in the process of rebuilding my 250R and I decided to get some muriatic acid to strip paint easily off some parts. I threw my waterpump cover in a bit of acid thinking it would take the paint off it. I pulled it out a few minutes later and the paint was all still there but it was bubbling a lot and it turned all the exposed aluminum a graphite color. I was wondering if this will cause problems with the cover later.
Holyman
Muriatic acid isextremely corrosive to aluminum. And whatever you do, NEVER NEVER put aluminum and muriatic acid in a closed container... IT WILL EXPLODE!!!
4strokesblow
Thanks holyman Do you think if I were to take all the paint off the cover and put it back in the muriatic acid to make the whole cover the same color it would affect it enough to make a problem with the cover? Holyman
Most guys just use aircraft stripper to get the paint off and buff it from there. I my experience has been VERY bad with leaving aluminum in muriatic acid. If you are going to try it again, I would just brush it on the metal and hose it off when you get the result you are looking for. If it is leaft submerged in the acid, it will physically corrode the metal.

Fireman-hott
Yeah zinc and hydrochloric acid will produce some hydrogen gas. Theres zinc under the thinner than paper cover of copper on a penny. Man I have a story about a Fire Chief of a city department to remain nameless, trying to determine if the leak from this truck was acid or water(they flush out the tank/hose afterwards). I said scratch a penny and throw it in there. He called me a moron I told him to fuck off, grabed a penny(what one was doing in my bunker gear I will never know). Scratched it so there was some grey showing and flipped it in the liquid, sure as shit it bubbled. Its acid now go get some fucking booming materials. Man to this day I dont think we would get along on a hazmat call. Young guy having more knowledge than an old guy jealousy.
joshdagreat56
This reminds me of some fun we used to have with the works toliet bowl cleaner .... back in the day we would get a glass bottle with a good tight plastic lid pour 1/2 full with the works, then wad some aluminum foil up and stick in the works give it a good shake for about 10 secs and run it usally takes a min or two to go off but its worth the wait.. Holyman
Great idea idiot. Teach a bunch on 14 year olds to make chemical bombs in glass bottles. My idiot brother in law almost lost his fingers that way.
