DBLtapS
Went for a ride and I only have 2 gears. The clutch engages and disengages and I checked the tranny fluid (its at the right level.) I havent drained it yet but, I imagine that will be the first step and look for metal... I only looked for a second in the clymer and thought I would ask someone out there to try and narrow it down. Thanks for the help in advance. Leadfoot350
Take off the clutch cover and use the manual to check the position of the shift shaft. If it is not that then you might have bent a fork. The banshee shift shafts suck and bend and break. I have broken two of the lower part of the c shaped hook. DBLtapS
I am trying to get the clutch basket off now. The shift shaft looks to be the problem. It isnt grabbing.... More to follow when I get everyting apart... 319525 I got the basket off and the shift shaft looks to be fine. I can shift with no problems from 1 thru 4. When I get to 5th I have to turn the mainshaft by hand. Maybe a 16th of a turn. Then it goes thru to 6th fine. Is this normal? Anyone got an idea? RBD
It is quit normal to have to rotate the transmission shaft to go through the gears.
DBLtapS
It is quit normal to have to rotate the transmission shaft to go through the gears. 319763 That is what I thought. A buddy of mine seems to think I need to rip the cases apart. I think it may have been stuck. I did adjust the main shift shaft adjust bolt. In you opinion should I put it all back togeather and try it?
RBD
If the main shift shaft adjustment was off and you had to adjust it, I would but it back together and try it. Also while you are in there make sure you clutch is adjusted properly and the steel plates are not blued and warped.
fixitrod
Make sure the adjuster for the shift shaft is tight. The locking nut needs to be tight. If it comes loose the symptoms will be it shifts fine when cruising but It doesn't shift right when drag racing. Been there done that. A shift shaft doesn't cost much and may be worth getting a new one while you have it torn apart. Might keep you from splitting the cases. DBLtapS
Thank you for the insight. From the sounds of it, could it be anything in the case? There is always a few people who say, "I had a banshee and I had the same problem. It was the shift fork." Or somthing to that affect.... This is the first major problem I have had with my shee and I have no experience tearing it down. I just want to take my time and get it right. I am still paying her off.... Thanks for you patience. 87sheerips
bent shift fork? or shift rod itself?
sam97
I had a similar problem with my shift shaft. It stuck me in 3-4th gears. Took it apart, it was completely out of position on the star. I bought everything new, shaft assembly from stealership, modded shift star from boonman, etc. No problems since. Good luck.
