Sand Rail Engines......

I use to have a sandrail. It had a Volkswagon 1600 dual port, with dual Delorto carbs. It would flat fly. They don't weigh anything. The steerring brakes was the most fun.

I wouldn't ever run duals on a 1600, there's no point. Plus Delarto carbs aren't even manufactured anymore. Thank God I still got mine! :D I'd stick with a single carb on a stock dual-port 1600, which is a very dependable motor. But yeah, I was kinda thinking along the same lines...maybe even an 1835cc motor; if jetted right, dual carbs will compliment it nicely. I run a stroked 1968cc motor with dual delarto carbs, ratio rockers, WD130cam, and some other goodies, nothing special...but it's a blast!

those mini-rails look like fun, I'd say look for a 1000cc motor though if you plan on duning it...little extra grunt on the sand never hurts & if set up right shouldn't be anymore stress than a 600cc motor.

Here is another place for info. They have plans and parts they sell. And the rails here show how to do 4 wheel independent.

Desert Karts

Alot of mini rails up here use snowmobile engines. You get an easy to ride rail with no shifting. I would suggest a Rotax 670cc if snowmobile route was taken.

I've been thinking about making one myself, for putt putting around cause I got a cb 750 motor sitting in the garage.

I was thinking about a Sled Engine, But I would just like the sound of the newer 600's and the revs, Plus nothing beats shifting.
