Cotton eyed Joe
Never thought it would happen to me, but tonight the wife found 2 different charges for $250, and another for $138 on one of our credit cards that we no longer use, but are in the process of paying off. In fact the charges were made on two seperate days this last week. We reported it and they cancelled the 2 charges and put a freeze on the account. Unfortunately we dont' know what locations the 2 charges were made, but one was a hobby shop, and both of them said PayPal on the descriptions. I wish I knew if it was local or what. I'd like to find the person that did it. Also, how someone would get the card info is a complete mystery. We have never used that card online, and have used it once in the last year, around 8 months ago, and I don't even remember where. When we make a payment on the card, we don't throw away the billing info, we file it away with the check number and date we paid on it. All I know is we are checking our accounts weekly now instead of monthly when we pay on them. I don't think its a mistake either. The two charges were in 2 different places on 2 different dates. Anyone ever have something like this happen?? I'm so pissed off I don't know if I can even sleep tonight.

Wallrat
My wife left her credit card sitting on the counter at the pet store a few months back. Realized it a few days later...after some punk had rung up about $800 worth of golf crap, clothes and gas. Took a little phone work but we didn't have to pay any of it. Dark Ranger
That truly sucks! We all need to keep a closer eye on our accounts. Don't make it so easy for thieves. Did I mention I hate thieves?

I hand the girl at the register my debit/credit card, she has me sign the receipt, hands me the food and the receipt and tells me to have a nice night. I damn near left before I realized she hadn't given me my card back. It some how ended up under a couple of other recepts on her counter. Honest enough mistake I think..... I hope the credit card company is watching our frozen account, and I hope who ever is trying to use it ends up on the business end of a police baton or a German Shepard Sickboy... That SUCKS!! Identity theft is something I hope NEVER happens to me. The next time I renew my divers license I'm not having my SS# put on it, since its an option in Utah to have it or not. dlnoss
It irritates me when merchants don't ask for ID. That would help. As a merchant myself, I don't ship to adresses other than the billing address on the card unless I know the buyer. I believe it is the merchant's responsibility, and ultimate loss, if the cardholder protests. I know it is in my case. I've had the credit card company pull funds back out of my account a couple of times when the cardholder said it wasn't them that made the purchase. I understand the frustration Stan. I'm not a violent person (well, not really) but I wouldn't feel bad about inflicting some excrutiating pain on theives.
PUSH THE THROTTLE
My girlfriend had her card number stolen while she was in Europe. About a month after she returned the credit card company called her and asked about all these charges that took place the week before and they took care of it. Gotta give the credit card companies some "credit" atleast they take care of it.

fixitrod
Here's a scam to look out for. When you use your card at a store, people are taking pictures of them with these camera phones over peoples shoulders and when you hand them to the waitresses !! My cards all say "see id" on the back. They might check once in 10 times. It's nuts. Good thing you caught it when you did stan.

Good thing you caught it when you did stan. 315475[/snapback] That's exactly what I do too, put the "see ID" on the back of my cards... I've been hit a couple of times in the past few years, you just have to do like you said and check your account DAILY and look for any foreign charges. Sorry to hear about this Stan, it's a great thing you caught it when you did!
kenr74
I had been wondering how those electronic credit card things that you sign with a fake pen work. I thought they used some sort of pattern recognition or something so I started writing my name totally different. They never said anything so I started writing totally different names like Bugs Bunny and shit I just made up. Still nothing.....I was thinking what the hell!! These people don't even check the signatures. I finally wrote HOWBOUT A BLOWJOB, and then asked the lady how those things made sure that I was the right person. She said that they just looked at it and made sure the signatures were the same. I just smiled as I took my stuff and left. Looked back on the way out the door and she was laughing. I guess she must have checked my signature.

ledofthezep
All the more reason I have no desire to own a credit card. My g/f is a waitress & has talked about people she'd worked with previously that would record people's CC info when taking they're payment...she said that she heard of one chick who would record at least 5 people's CC info a night. She quit before she got caught. It's just too easy, hell; I take CC payments from people all around KS & surrounding areas for internet service, I have access to literally thousands of accounts; but not once have I even considered stealing anyone's CC info. I personally wouldn't primarily because of the slight risk in possibly getting caught. Thiefs belong 6' under.
