dlnoss
With stock compression and timing the only advantage of race gas is that it is usually higher quality than pump gas. The same is true for av-gas since, by necessity, it dosen't turn to sh.. after a short period of time. Oxygenated gas would run better and leaner. I would increase the octane above 93 if I had more than 150 psi compression with stock porting and timing.
sanddevil111
its very possible that you may have noticed a diference. Higher octane fuel will help your shee run cooler. when a motor gets hot it is less efficient and looses power. So what you probably noticed is the little extra boost you got from the motor staying cool. Just what I discovered back when my motor was stock. 303029[/snapback] well mines not stock just the domes are
RNBRAD
i run 17 octane and i have stock domes and it runs fine..for those of you who say it doesnt enhance performance I beg to differ....I noticed when i went from 93 to 110 and then again from 110 to 117...big diff.. Yea the only way you will notice a difference is if you were running really crappy pump gas prior to using the race gas. The only other way to tell a difference would be a change in the amount of oxygenation between the 110 and 117, if it was even oxygenated fuel to begin with. Otherwise the difference was caused by the placebo effect, meaning you thought or believed it would increase performance, therefore your mind led you to believe your intuition. fixitrod
As I was reading this, I thought of a of factors.... Quality of fuel. Like Dave said, it's most likely going to be that reason why people notice an increase. That's not going to de the case when sanddevil went from 110 to 117. Quality fuel was already in the picture. I'm guessing the jetting was off from the beginning. Being that different fuels have a different specific gravity, this would effect jetting. Running the higher octane fuel may be yeilding proper or nearer proper jetting. Race fuel can be lighter and response can increase some. Race fuel can make the piston crowns run too cool on an already jetted properly engine and decrease performance.
