Dialing in the jets

Recommended Posts

I changed my main jets just about 2 weeks ago do to me cutting the back off the lid and to the temperature dropping. I think the main is pretty close to being right. But the 1/4 to 1/2 throttle is kind of bogging. I didn't change the needles but should I lean it out. Move the clip up right.

Well it feels like the rpms don't build like they did before I changed it. It doesnt just flat out bogg and it doesnt' sputter. The best way I know how to explain it is that it kind of hesitates from 1/4 to 1/2 throttle when I build the rpms. Its not terrible but I feel like it could be dialed in better. I have a question though. I thought that if it boggs down or sputters then it was rich. If what you said is true then what is a sign of it being rich.

Sredish is right. You have a lean bog....Rich needles will spit and sputter and powerband won't even kick in...Hesitation is ALWAYS caused by leaness. I've always found that shees run the strongest at the clip below richness....If you go to the 4th clip and it runs great, then try the 5th clip, it might get even better. One clip will make a big difference and it'll either get better or worse, no inbetween...Trail and error, let us know what your settings are... ;)

Here's where it's a little tricky. You can loose some power, or pull, buy getting a littlle rich. Not enough to make it sputter, not enough that it boggs like when lean, just a tad to rich. Play with the needle like you said and see what happens. When you richened the main you allowed more fuel through the orfice that the needle can use. Maybe it's just a tad to much. You'll have to play with the needle to find out.

I have sst's k&n with no snorkel but with lid on. Now I have 300 mains with back 2 inches of lid cut. My needle is in the stock position which is the 3rd or middle clip position. I guess I will try it. Its like you said its all trial and error. The worst part is that where I live the weather is so funny. It just snowed 11 inches and it was a high of like 17 degrees the other day and thursday it is supposed to be like 55-60 degrees. Its driving me nuts.

Needles have a big affect on the performance, but aren't as tempermental as the mains. I don't move my needles once they are set, so don't worry about temp....
