idles crappy

discharge

Recommended Posts

alright, just got my 916s on, finally got it fired up today and it doesn't idle well at all...ugh....it doesn't have much pick up either in the low range....

thing is, i installed the biggers jets and im running 280s...but noone around had the pilots which DMC recommended...they said use 30s but i couldn't get any at the time....would this be the reason why its running crappy?

sounds like an idiot question and im fairly sure this is problem but im not sure...

thanks

what size pilots do you have and how many kicks does it take it to cold start? Chances are, DMC and stclark are correct (even tho he's from MO) and you may just need to find the 30s and put them in. Starting and idling issues often are due to the pilot jet and if it's lean it might not want to idle or start well.

Yea, ya gotta order them unless your in an area that the dealer deals alot with banshee's. None of the yamaha dealers around here had any, had to order. Lucky for me, the main distribution for the midwest is right near here, two days to get them.

You probably need the #30 pilots to run as good as possible, but a lot of people run FMF fatties on #25 pilots so I would think you should be able to get it to run decent on them. Have you tried turning your air screws all the way in and backing them out 1/2 turns. Also if you richen the needle 1 or 2 positions (1 or 2 clip positions from the blunt end, middle clip is stock) it will help compensate in the 1/4 throttle range for a leaner pilot. The needle will probably help with the "pick up" and get it on the pipe quicker.

yeah the changes that DMC recommended were 280 mains....30 pilots...3rd clip on the needle...and 1 1/2 turns on the carbs...im gonna pull them off again once i get the new pilots...i'll try it out with changing the needle like you said Ducman and see if it makes any sort of difference...

alright ran it again today, same problem, it really lags in the powerband....when i sit there revving it, it sounds like it should...it just won't idle and doesn't seem like its making the power that it should be?...i don't know...i fooled around with the airscrews and that didn't seem to help much, i backed them all the way in and then did the half turns but that didn't seem to help much....

so then when im riding, no more then 10 minutes it starts pissing out coolant from the overflow hoses in front...which i'm pretty sure was a bad thing, so i killed it and loaded it back up...

its a real pain in the balls to start it when its cold to, i mean granted, it was no more then 25-30 degrees out when we were riding it but still....

thanks again for all the help...im not all that great with diagnosing the way it should be jetted....

Try this for a start: 300 mains, needle 4th clip from the blunt end, 30 pilots, make sure you clean the carbs out w/ compressed air....your carbs might be plugged up...let me know how that works...also make sure you have the choke tube in place between the carbs (1/4"x2" long), then make sure the carb slides aren't in backwards (cutaway should face the air box) if they are wrong, then you have the wrong slide in the wrong carb, just change them over...

discharge,im no pro but i could not get my 9/16's to pull the fatter pilots(27.5.30} it had the problems your decribing, but with the fatter pilots,it just would not pull off of idle worth a shit, put the stock pilots back in and and it cleaned up alot i run 290's,k&n,no lid,2 1/2 out on air screws raised needle clip up one pos.runs great, but i dont think these pipes will ever come off idle as well as toomey, fmf's that i have had in the past/them sonbithes do cool though!!!good LUCK.
