S&W or Sig 1911 and holster?

Recommended Posts

I am getting ready to go threw the classes to carry a firearm on duty for my security officer position. I cannot carry a back up. I am considering the following fire arms,

http://www.firearms.smith-wesson.com/store...&sw_activeTab=1 http://www.firearms.smith-wesson.com/store...&sw_activeTab=1 http://www.sigarms.com/products/gsr-models...?product_id=197

I am going to work at bars/night hangouts. I want to keep it under 2,000.00. I also need a speed holster for when I am in the office and a Triple retention for working in a area with people. Who makes the best triple retention, and can I get it for all three of these guns? That might eliminate some of my selection. I am also looking at night sites, who makes the best? Would I be better off with a glock 22?

Trijicon and ghost rings make some killer night sights. I wouldn't consider any other brand than sig myelf. Although I favor the 357sig in the p229, arguably the most accurate pistol caliber ever made. Either way you can't go wrong.

Your best bet is to go try out a few differnt models at a local gun range. 45's are slow but easy to handle round. 40's are really snappy and lots of muzzle flip. 357sig is sim to 40. 9mm is easy to handle but may not stop as well as any of the other rounds listed. 45's have a draw back in the size and amount of ammo you can carry. Glock makes the models 23,33, and 19 which are easier to carry than the full size model but just as good. I suggest sticking with these three brands H&K, Glock, and Sig... alphabetical order not order of preferance. Each one of these brands is reliable and will be up to the task of daily carry. You might want to call a lawyer and find out about the liabilities of this whole situation.

Another thread by you about buying crap... jeez.

My $.02. The sig is a fantastic gun. I will personally never own another Smith semiauto. I own two Glocks and am very pleased with them. People complain about Glocks and that its "just all a name" and all marketing hype -- well -- as an owner, I can tell you that they are absolutely fantastic if you're getting a gun for some type of *combat* (using the word in the most vague possible sense) work, the Glock is really the way to go. No words to describe it.. its just.. there.

The sig is fantastic too. Not my choice for a carry weapon (yet) but a great gun. Again, wouldn't get a smith.

also get what you can handle. A .40 is almost impractical as it kicks sharper than a .45 and the power it provides is only greater at a distance -- and no, you aren't going to be shooting anyone at a distance. 9MM is not a bad gun -- .380 would be an excellent choice also -- and a .45. If you can get 5 rounds off on a 9mm before you can get 2 off on a .45, buy the 9. People think that the biggest caliber they can shoot once or twice is the best. Wrong -- the biggest caliber you can handle and shoot accurately AND quickly is the right caliber for you.

oh yeah -- have never been to a bar/nightclub, even in a bigger city, that anybody carries a firearm.

H&K 45 cal. Great weapon. Had the H&k P7M8 9mm, great, reliable, easy to use weapon and the bonus of the grip cocker (the built in safety on the grip) made this the best weapon I have owned. Have a sig P228 with night sites now, bigger weapon than the Heckler, still pretty good and reliable.

Stay away from the Smith & Wesson, your paying for the name. There's better 1911's out there if that is what you want/can carry. Caliber is something that you have to decide what you can handle. The Sig is excellent, pricy, harder to get quick repairs if needed (not too likely), Glock is also great in any caliber but the .45 GAP. Only reason I say that is cause holsters are a slight problem to find for your needs. I've got the .45GAP and like it so don't take it wrong, just a holster problem and since this caliber is not taking off, doubt this will change. Another good gun is the H&K in .45, but they are bulky. Their compact isn't really compact (unless you compare it to their fullsize), but is very easy to shoot well. Good luck on your decision, buying guns can be fun.

Everyone has basically covered it. Try before you buy, go to the local gun shop/range and test fire as many differnet side arms as poss. In the end, what fits you is what fits you. Just do not get hung-up name brands.

I carry a Sig P229 in .40 and I shoot it really well, it just fits my hands.

Aim hard and shoot straight, or some crap like that :P

S&W Sucks! Sigs are good guns. Me personally, I am a glock man. I would go with the glock 35 if you are using it for duty, a little bulky for concealed, but an awesome duty weapon! If you are considering the glock 22, definately go with the 35 over the 22, less recoil, extended slide lock, extended magazine release.
