need your help

hi there, im running a 14 teeth sprocket, but some friends told me that would be better a 13 one, cause im going to use it in the sand... honestly i dont know, and i alredy bought everything to replace the drive, except for the sprocket! please tell me what to do!!! thanksssss!! ( sorry for the mistakes and for being such an ingnorant!)

It depends on the area, your mods, and what you're doing, but unless it's a really small area I'd stick with the 14T. The 13T is lower gearing so you'll lose top speed, but you'll get off the line quicker...for average riding you'll shift more but can sometimes get away with pulling a lower gear. In the end it's a tradeoff, but front sprockets are cheap and you can experiment with 13T, 14T, and 15T and see what you like best...

thanks benbb, i have wiseco pistons, fattys-pc2, fmf reeds... and a few things i dont know how you call it, i think you are right the area is huge and it would be the best keeping the 14t, but i wanna try...

so, can i change the front sprocket without replacing the chain? here they keep telling me that in order to change the sprocket or the chain... you have to change everything else, is that true? i believe that if you have used it a lot!! you would have to change everything else, but they are all new...

Go to rocky mt atv and get the 13t give it a try if you don't like it you only out $10. Personaly I love the 13t for woods and hill climb and a 15t for open areas, dunes. But you won't know till you try.

 

and you don't have to replace everything at once either. But I also have to ride 2 links when I switch from 13t to 15t.

it would be a little difficult to me buying in the states since i am in argentina! but they arent expensive here too, thanks anyway! i ll buy the 13t and a 14t new one! gonna try....

 

13tooth is very popular amongst the dune crowd. I personally believe you'd like it in the sand, but ya never know until you try it. That's what I'm running now, but I know I need to go up to like a 14 or 15 on the front now that my swingarm is 2" shorter. Just been to lazy to change it & see the difference. 

led with the swingarm shorter you have plenty of more traction dont you??

last week i beated a friend of mine stock shee with paddle tires in a drag race (not 1/4 mile), i was running kenda dominator, if i change for the 13t sprocket it would be more difficult to beat him, am i right???

I don't think it's entirely necessary to replace the chain at the same time, yes it's a good idea so that they wear evenly (both sprockets and the chain), but if your chain and rear sprocket are in good shape you should be fine. Just remember to keep an eye on the other stuff for wear since they will need replacing before the front does again.

 

BTW when you're replacing that front sprocket, it would be a good idea to add a case saver, it's cheap insurance that IF your chain skips or snaps because it's worn, that it won't bust your case. You might also consider cutting a couple of the "fins" off the stator cover so you can get a socket on the front sprocket nut to change it easier, that way you don't hafta pull the footpeg, shifter, and stator cover just to swap front sprockets...
