German Shepherd
Hey all! Since it is winter I want to start with my safe room construction in my new home. It has a woden frame and an older solid woden door that is aprox a little under 1 inch thick. I want to get a basic dead bolt that will take alot of hits. There are 5 hinges on it now and a place where it looks like a barrel bolt used to be. I want to get 3 heavy duty hinges and replace the 5 week ones that have week screws. Could you reccomend hinges, a brand of screws, and a reglar type of dead bolt? I have a buddy who is a carpeneter so he will help me install. I cant put a handel lock because it has the old style skleton key lock. So it will just be a heavy duty dead bolt. I bought a heavy duty barrel bolt and a chaine style lock. I will put the barrel bolt on the bottom of the door, so It will go into the floor, and the chaine at the regular location. I am also buying a maxidoor gate http://www.maxidor.co.za/products.htm To put infront of my solid door. My plan is to keep my room locked when ever I am not home and just to lock the cage part at night and to keep my solid door open so I can hear out side my room. Is it nessiarry to reinforce my woden frame with a metal one? I hope this is helping other people with there home plan. This stuff is fun to do. Maybe someday I will buy a camera or two as well. Thank you all again for your help. Here is the link for http://www.g-u.com/doorbolt.htm.

banshee04le
Booby traps dude...you need booby traps. You know, door knobs tied to shotgun triggers and things like that. I like a flame thrower triggered by a motion sensor myself. Bar-b-qued intruder. I've also used a bucket of hydrochloric acid suspended over head with a trip wire but that makes a mess. Although I burned my home down with the flame thrower so maybe the acid mess isn't so bad.

Holyman
I used to work handling insurance claims and most of the stuff you get to "secure" your home is of little value. Most interior doors have only a 3/4" thick door jamb and no matter what kind of lock you have on it, the door is going to open. Even a heavy gate that people put on the outside of a door is only as good as the few screws that hold it on to the trim. A decent crow bar will rip it down in a couple pulls. Even if you were going to get a safe door to put on your room, a foot can go thru drywall and most plaster with just as much ease as going thru a cheap door. The best way to make your room secure is to screw T111 plywood siding on all the interior walls of the room. Make sure it is screwed to the studs, and laminate the inside of the door with it as well. Screw and glue it to the door. Make sure that all of your existing hinge screws are long enough to go into the studs and not just the door jamb and install surface mount dead bolts at the top and bottom of the door on the latch side. Make sure your screws go thru the plywood paneling and into the stud. I see no need to attach anything to the floor and really no need for the gate. This way from the outside of the room it looks like any other door in the house but inside it is solid. The final thing to do is see a doctor about your paranoid behaviour. Even with all these steps, a sawzall would get someone into the room in a matter of minutes if they really wanted to get in.
BigRed350x
Give me 15 minutes and a dremel and I can get through just about any kind of crap you could put on your door. Screw that, give me my 79 ford with the good ol solid steel bumper and I will drive through your gay ass door. How about moving somewhere that you don't have to worry about shit like that. If you have to reinforce your door to protect your little TV and VCR, that should be a clue to you that you should maybe GET YOUR ASS OUT OF THERE and move somewhere better. NugShee
Holy shit this thread is funny. This reminds me of a guy I met that thought there were always people outside hiding in the bushes watching him. Anyway, You can do all the locks and what not that you want but nothing is as good as just going to the insurance company and having it all insured. If I were going to break into a hime and they had one room super secure then you know thats the room with all the valuables. Does your room have any glass windows? I learnt the hard way that if you have something really nice, you should not tell anyone about it or else its going to come up missing one day.
