Computer Help

I am have been having problems watching videos on the net for the last couple months and its really starting to piss me off now. I can watch any video if its through Quicktime, but if its through Windows Media Player, only about 1 in 20 videos will play. When I try to watch one that wont work this comes up- "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Back when it first started I thought it may have been a problem with Windows Media Player, so I uninstalled in from my computer, and tried to re-install it. I tried and tried, and every time somewhere during the installation process it would say an error has occured, that installation cannot be completed, and to try it again. Finally for some reason it worked, but still can't watch shit. I have DivX, Real Player, and WMP, still no better. I am running Windows XP with Mozilla Firefox if it matters. Anybody know what the problem is or where I could find the codec I might need?? banghead

what is the file extension (ie. WMV,MPEG...) of the movie you are trying to watch? Have you tried downloading the vid, then playing it? I normally have no problems watching MPEG/WMV files with windows media player. Have you got the most updated windows media player?

Yep, I  always save them first, but I've tried viewing them without downloading too. I have WMP 10 I think, it was the newest one on download.com about a month ago. I have also tried two of the older versions and the same thing is happening.  :confused:

I guess my only good suggestion without looking at your comp would be to do a virus scan, and also run a spyware program like adaware. seems pretty strange to me. good luck!

Try this

 

Open windows media player

select tools

options

file types

toward the bottom click select all

click apply

click ok

 

 

No open internet explorer

click tools at the top

internet options

under tepmorary internet files click delete files, check delete offline content and click ok

click delete cookies

at the top click advanced

then toward the bottom click restore defaults

click apply

click okay

 

If you have xp, I can tell you a couple other things to do.

If you have a "my computer" icon on your desktop, right click on it and seleect manage. You'll see and event viewer in there. Try to run a movie and see if the event viewer shows anything.

 

If you don't have the icon, you can got to start,programs, administrative tools and event viewer.

 

See if you can find and error in there for it. If so, click on the link included in the error and click on it. This will take you to a microsoft website and include what they think may be a fix.
