Polish or Chrome?

Had to take the side case off for some other maintenance, looking at either polishing or chroming it. A shop quoted me 50 bucks to chrome it. Any body have pictures of polish vs. Chrome?

Polishing you can do yourself, but requires maintenance to keep the shine. Chrome is a no-hassle way of keeping the shine, just wash it once in awhile. Pay the $50 and have it chromed if you don't wanna have to polish the damn thing every 4 months like I do with mine.

hence the dillema, on one hand, low maintenance high shine, on the other, durability yet a high amount of maintenance. either way it is going to look good. Any other opinions or photos from people who have done one or the other would be appreciated. Thanks guys, your opinions and experiance are valuable.

Polish it, save money, make it as shiny as you want it...Polishign is a good way to make your bike shine without the high price of chroming, and all the oohs and ahhs from everyone that looks at it makes you feel even better...Polish it, you wotn be disspaointed...In fact, im polishing one right now for my other banshee also, it takes time so be prepared..

Cheers

I wasn't thinking about the extra step for chroming aluminum and I doubt the guy who gave me the 50.00 quote was either. That alone could change the way i do things. I know there are several threads on polishing, maybe I will just do it that way. Besides, the wife said I need a project anyway.

Peace-

i thought all chromed parts were first copper dipped to fill in imperfections in the metal. my pref on the side case thing though would be to polish it, then have it PC'ed clear. i think thats probably the best route. just MO though.

Platers use both nickel and copper. Generally copper is first, nickel then chrome. Some platers don't use copper and some use a blend of copper nickel prior to the chrome. As stated above copper is a great filler for pits that can be further buffed and made smooth. Larger pits can be welded or silver solder used as a filler.

I love chrome!!!
