Clutch Wear

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how often you guys change out your clutch? I changed mine last year, but I use it a lot riding trails. How long do you usually get out of your clutch before you replace it? Oh yeah, I have all 6 aftermarket springs in there...won't that wear it out a little faster too? I thought I felt a slip last time I rode it....Thanks for the help!

Stiffer springs will make it last longer beacause it will slip less. Replace it when it starts to slip. You can also measure the thickness of the fibers and steels. The clymers manual has the values.. I don't know them off the top of my head. The steels should be around .047" new I believe.

Could the fluid I'm using make it slip? I've always run 10-30 engine oil in it before and haven't had any problems. Only difference is that I used Castrol this last time where I have been using Valvoline before...Thanks for the reply fixitrod

The oil can make a difference. I don't know for sure if that's your case, but it can.

I switched from gear oil to dexron 3 transmission oil. I was heasitant until I found out a lot of new trucks also use it in transfer cases. I don't have the pull in first gear any more with the clutch pulled in either. It shifts better and slips less. I think I'll stick with tranny oil unless someone has a reason not to.
