System Pressure

Ok all, I have a 2002 with T-5's, timing advanced 4 degrees, pro design filter and thats about it. I have been having issues with overheating and cant seem to beat it. I have checked the jetting and have found I could raise the main from 340 to 350-360 or so and have already raised the pilot to 27.5. The machine runs great but still losing fluid (engine ice) which im very concerned about. I rode it hard yesterday and let it sit until today. When I removed the radiator cap it had a bunch of pressure behind it and also had a smell of exhaust to it. Now I have already changed the head gasket once, but should there be pressure there that long after a ride?? Also not sure about the smell, maybe my mind playing tricks on me. I have a PD pump on order also with new larger jets in case I need them....Any help would be nice!!!!! bangheadbanghead

Sounds like the head is leaking, the cylinder is pressurizing the coolant system. If you just changed the head gasket, the head may be warped, you'll need to check it with a feeler gauge on a flat plate (or plate glass). Is the radiator puking any at all?

Make sure you cooling system is up to par. You may have a problems somewhere else that could cause your head to warp, if this has been going on for some time. Make sure your impellar is working properly and that you don't have any debree clogging the head or your radiator. Cause if your head is warped generally from overheating, your problem is elsewhere. It may be beneficial to get a temp guage till you get the problem (s) rectified to save you more trouble in the long run. This will allow you to safely troubleshoot instead of waiting for a disaster.

Thanks for all the replies. The radiator has been replaced due to a leak and the impellar looks good from what I can see. I did order the pro design impellar. As for the radiator puking, yes it does and after every ride I need to add a sustantial amount of fluid to make up for the loss. So its safe to say that pressure in the system after a long rest is not normal?????

Though i've never checked for pressure in the system after a day or so, it should equlaize itself as the temp drops (assuming proper functioning system). It sounds like the cooling system may be picking up extra pressure from the combustion chamber as BenBB stated. It may be a very slow leak and hard to diagnose. I wouldn't hesitate popping the head off the shee and check just to make sure.

From the sounds of it I guess I need to pop the head off and give it a look see for any warpage. Thanks for the help guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your pressurizing the cooling system from a bad head gasket or cracked head I would think when you shut it down the pressure would be reversed, and not hold for a day.

do you still have your overflow bottle on, thats needed tohave the cooling system work properly.

It may take the high pressure of combustion to push the air across the gasket. Thier may not be enough pressure to reverse this process from the cooling system. Any excess pressure will be bled through the cap and out the overflow.

Yes the bottle is in use and relocated. No the gasket is not OEM, just bought one today. I will be removing the head today to check for any cracks and warpage. Is coolant loss normal, because I never lost any before????? Thanks for all the help you guys, I would not get through this crap without you!!!!!!!!! :shootself:

no, it's not normal to lose coolant if everything is working properly
