changing oils

Recommended Posts

I have an 03 that I just installed fmf ssts with lid on without snorkel with 260 mains and 30 pilots. I plan on getting noss head with 20cc domes and andvancing timing 4 degrees and lightning my flywheel. I have ran yamalube from day one but I know that it isn't the best. Where I live it is hard to get anything else without ordering it. I also have ran it at 24:1 mixing ratio but can I run at 32:1 without sacrificing engine life. Also if I switch oils will it cause problems. I know that you should stick with the same oil but I want some good stuff. Help please.

YES, IT IS SAFE!!! switching oils will not cause a problem. Oils have changed dramatically in the last 20 to 30 yrs and some of the DON'TS still come up from time to time when not all oils were compatible as they would precipitate and gell. That is not the case today and all oils I know of are compatible. As for changing your pre-mix ratio, yes you will sacrifice longevity by running a higher ratio. Most people get around this issue by running a higher quality oil such as a synthetic thus allowing them to run at a higher ratio. I'm not sure if you are talking pre-mix oil specifically or tranny oil. As for tranny oil I would use a good automotive synthetic oil as motorcycle specific oils are very expensive and can be hard to find in small towns. Just be sure that the automotive oil does not have Moly additive i.e Mobil 1, as it is such a good friction reduction molecule that it will cause your clutch to slip. As for claims on motorcycle specific oils being superior over automotive oils, for several different reasons, has been proven to be overexaggerated and not all fact. I use nothing but Mobil 1 15w-50 in all my quads and my motorcycle. For pre-mix I use Mobil 1 MX-2t.

Yamilube is a good quality oil. I use it in my 99 and have done so since I bought it new. I just did the top end on it in August after 5 years of hard riding. If you wanna switch thats up to you, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with Yamilube. If its easy to get where you are at by all means stick with it.

The biggest thing is 90% of people think that since you pay $5 a pint for premix, its the best stuff. Then they mix it 50-1 and bitch that they wear out rings in two years......

If all else fails, use yamalube.....there is alot of GOOD oils out there that are cheeper, but it takes some research to find them.

I actually use "injects"....I have for many years, and mix 32-1. Its about $2 a quart and burns pretty damn clean. My 97 never has had rings, and it still dont need them....and yes Ive checked the compression reciently.

My biggest thing of advice has ALWAYS been. Dont rely on some fancy ass oil at 50-1, because one day your gonna be out riding and need oil and cant find "your brand"....now you have to run some crazy oil and mix it 32-1......now your lean......good job!
