Shifting Problem when Loaded Up

Hi,

I know Banshees are notorious for their tranny's and shifting. I have owned a few and I don't recall having this problem as much as with this one.

When I am out riding in the desert or dunes and I am dragging or otherwise shifting through the gears under full power, I have the following problem. This occurs when booth hill shooting or flat surface (ie sand drags).

I start in 2nd, power band kicks in, quick shift to 3rd, no problem. Quickly loaded back up , pull in clutch and go to shift to 4th. Damn it! The shift lever lifts all the way up through the motion (or so it seems) but never disengages 3rd and engages 4th. Ok, pin it again for a second and try again. Same thing. Let a little off so the engine is being turned by the wheels a little, pull in clutch and shifts smoothly.

The same thing occurs for 4th, 5th and 6th. I have no problem hitting those gears when I am not doing a quick drag style shift. If I am just cruising and I do a non-rushed shift, where I just casually let off the gas, pull clutch, shift, and release clutch there is no problem. It really seems like it has the problem when I am hitting full throttle and do a quick shift motion (using clutch and letting off gas, just doing the motion quickly).

The best way to describe it is when your bike is stationary (usually off), and you are trying to move through more than one gear. Where the first gear change is fine, but then the next gear change doesn't disengage/enagage, the shifter just moves up or down with no resistance, and you have to rock the bike to get it to shift again.

Any ideas on what this could be? I am going to troubleshoot it this weekend some more to see if it could be some simple stupid issue with the externals:

not using boots, just shoes

watching for shift level flex

etc

However, I am hoping this is a issue blatant enough for you repair gurus to point me in the right direction. I bought a shift-pro (yes I know some hate it and some love it), and I am going to try that as well just to see if it helps. I don't think it is clutch related. I've kind of ruled that out since 1 - 3 seem to USUALLY be fine. I have no other tranny problems I notice (noise, hard shifting, pop up of gear, grinding, etc). My problem seems to be isolated to quick shifting while the engine is wound up.

Oh, and on an unrelated topic for you guys with a +4 swingarm, what length chain (or even model #) do you need. Any good sites to pick one up at a good price? What about the brake line?

Thanks!!!!

I had the same problem with a 500cc duner. Whats happening is the shift shaft is slipping off the shift star when under alot of load. Pisses you off huh? Ride normal and they are all there. I had a .060 shim lasered out to space the shift star out so the shift shaft can't slip off. Worn star or your clutch cover is worn on the pad that the shaft rests against. Give me a call or PM me and I'll send you one. After installing the shim its never done it again. I install them on every motor I build as well as some local shops use them here in AZ also. If you look at the hooks that grab the star on the shift shaft you'll see that they are always on the outer edge of the star. The shim moves the star to the center so it can't slip.Works like a charm.

heres what i have dobne to my transmission and it shifts as slick as my bros 250r.

1)get the shift star modded

2)put a PVC pive section between the shifter and side cover so the shaft cant walk out away from the star inside.

3)shift forks and drum from an RZ350. These babies are hard to come by, but the forks have roller bearings on them instead of fixxed pins and the drum has a better profile. These things are sweet, but expect to pay good money for them if you find them.

4. Get every other engangement dog on the gears 2-6 machined off. This may be part of your problem. There are 6 dogs and the gear engaging into them is whacking against them. Whith only 3 on there it slides right in every time.

5) a billet shifter..that shock one flexes big time

6)keep the oil fresh.

With this setup I shift by just backing off the gas and lifting the shifter..no clutch, it just slides right it even with alittle throttle....cost me some money to do but was worth it

Guys,

You were absolutely right. I had a fair amount of slop in my shift shaft that allowed it to move a good 1/8 of an inch or so side to side. From what I saw, I pushed it all the way to the right the shoulder lever would barely hook up with the shift star. What I did was create a spacer on the shift shaft that went between shift lever and the outer case. I used a very thin nut that was the perfect diameter for the shift shaft. If anyone else has this problem, something like that, or several washers would work. I then put the shift lever as far right as it would go and tightened it down. There is no slack in either direction. Shifts very nicely now.

I've had that happen as well. Mine always does it between 2nd and 3rd. Its awesome to shift between those gears when it does it, BAM! next gear, but to get it back to normal I pull the cover and work the shaft until it reseats.

I had the same problem. Here's what I found. There is a cam that looks like a flat head screw to adjust the shift claw (what ever it's called). It's suppose to be centered on the shift star. Mine looked to be adjusted properly but I got to messing with it and found the cam retaining lock nut was loose. So, whenever I was on the gas it wouldn't grab the next gear because the adjustment was out. I tightened that up and haven't had a problem on 4 good hard rides. I use to have it all the damn time.
