Common problems

Alright, i know i'm stupid for asking this cause i think i know the answer but i want one from the people who actually own the quad. Do 2-stroke have any major draw backs to them. Yea you have to rebuild them more, but it's a lot easier to do. Is it true that you always have to work on them? I'm realy wanting a shee. But dad believes 2-strokes suck b/c suposedly you have to work on them all the time. It can't be that bad otherwise nobody would want to own one. Please give info. Stressed out warrior rider in distress..

I can only speak for the banshee because its the only quad I've ever owned. I bought mine used (2001) and the guy who owned it before me never once rebuilt. The pistons were worn and the reeds needed replacing. It was VERY simple to install my new wiseco pistons and Boyeson reeds. I've never had any mechanical expierience before hand and I stripped the bike to the frame and put it back together myself. After the rebuild, it feels like a whole new bike, and I've had NO problems yet except for my clutch cable melting on the pipe cuz I was a dumbass when I put that part on. Other than that dumb mistake, everything's been smooth for about 4 months now. If you can change gear oil, clean air filters, lube chains and tighten nuts and bolts every so often, theres no problem. The only drawback I really see is the low end. Its not really there. But I can still climb hills with the best of them. Uhhhh, Banshee don't really like to accelerate super quick when stock, but Banshees have about the biggest aftermarket following ever, so you'll always find upgrade parts.

All the maintenance I've done on my bike has been planned, either for regular upkeep or for mods.

My bike has never broken down, EVER.

It's a 2000 bought new from the dealer, still on the original bore, 125psi both sides.

Like the others said, keep up with the maintenance (which you have to do on all quads anyway) and it should last a long time!

I've got an 87 that I haven't had a bit of problems with some parts have worn out such as CDI, parts will wear out on either 2 or 4 strokes. The way I see it if something brakes it needs upgraded to something better. I have had Polaris's and Kawasaki's in the past all 4 strokes and the thing about them is that when they were broken down I had to take it to a dealer(warranty) and wait a week to get stuff fixed. I do everything to my Banshee myself and in less time using less money than a dealer.

There are some 2 strokes out there that are fairly high maintenance like the 2 wheel MX bikes that only have 1 ring on the piston and needs to be re-ringed regularly, but the banshee pistons and cylenders will last for years as long as you don't do stupid things like adding mods that require jetting changes and don't rejet it.

 

When I was from age 16 to 18, I had a Husqvarna 510 mx bike, 4 stroke, that sucked a valve and destroyed the head and piston. It was going to be over $1000 in parts to fix it so I ended up practically giving it away because I couldn't afford to fix it. A banshee will typically never cost anywhere that much to repare the motor if it does blow up and if you look at the maintenance costs below, re-building the top end on a banshee every few years might seem cheap.

 

I just spent $185 to get the first service/tune up on my wifes 4 stroke quad, YFZ 450. I'm thinking the maintenance on it is more expensive than the banshee unless I learn how to shim some valves. My 4 stroke Ducati street bike is up for it's 12K mile tune up and thats going to cost me about $600. If you get a 4 stroke that can match the performance of a banshee then it won't be cheap or maintenance free either.

I have a 99 warrior with a cam, titanium valves and springs, stage II pipe & silencer, intake, hinson clutch basket, yadda yadda yadda, and I have an 87 banshee thats bored 80 over, ported, intake, yadda yadda yadda... and I spend way more time working on the 4-choke warrior than my banshee. I romp on both of them, and just generally beat the hell out them, but I do the routine maintenance on both, and the warrior breaks down about twice as much as the banshee. The 4 stroke motor has about twice as many moving parts as a two stroke, so thats twice as many things that can go wrong with the bike. I agree with everyone here, if you take care of your bike, a two stroke will last just as long as anything else. I do a rebuild about once every year on the banshee, and it runs like the day I bought it. :clap:

The cases, cranks and trannys of both 4 strokers and 2 strokes are pretty much same concept. Thet both have suspension, brake and chain wear..

 

Before the Banshee I was a 4 toker ATC rider. If Honda made it on 3 wheels, it's prob. in my backyard.

I can build the honda 200 motor now with ease. Twice the cam/ timing chain (and/or) timing sprockets had something to do with the failure. :evil: :evil:

 

I bought my98 Banshee about 1 1/2 yrs ago, from my friend it maybe had 100 hrs and was garage kept.

The thing wasn't started for close to 5 months before I bought it and have been ride the F out of it. I dont give the gas in the tank time to go sour, meaning 'shee is riden close to daily wether it's a few laps out back or or a weekend trip of non stop ride N day and night. I figured the damn thing would have blown long ago with me riding it, being a 6yr old motor. It's a virgin motor no screws broken loose except to change clutch.

Finally I am tearing it down. Not because it needed it a rebuild but for a ProDesign Head that I bought 8 months ago..

So now I am just gonna put new weisco piston kit and punch the jugs for around $250 :notworthy: and I won't have to worry :dance:

for another 6 yrs? :bolt:

Thank you all for your thoughts on my questiuons. This is probably the best site on the net, in my opinion. Porn is not included in that otherwise it would be #1, So yea with that left out BansheeHQ is #1. Your statments have only supported my cause for a new shee. IF i can only get pop's to realize that 2-strokes don't suck then i'll be in the clear. It's not like i dont' have the money it's just that he thinks 2-storkes are the worst things every made.
