BenBB
I've heard about some dunes near El Paso a couple times but never found out exactly where they're at or how to get there, anybody got an idea? I know about the Kermit dunes, and "Red Sands" between Alamogordo and El Paso, but I could swear I've heard of something closer to El Paso. If anybody knows about them or who I could call to find out, I'd appreciate it.

Other than that we'd just pull over in the desert and ride. I had a dual purpose bike then.
BenBB
Thanks Rod, I was gonna PM you about it, thought if anyone knew about it you might. I found some aerial photographs that show some near Juarez but not sure I'm up for that much of a trip, heh.

What kind of bike did you have? I'm itch'n bad for a dualsport, but my financial situation is holding me back. But when I do get around to it I'm contimplating a DR-Z400S -maybe the 400E, then put a kit on it; or an XR400R with a bajadesigns dualsport kit...got any experience with either? The honda's really use to be the cadillac of dual sport bikes when I had mine. I only paid $500 for the one I had. I wrecked it, put some plastics on it and sold it for $1500. I always wanted the honda though becuase I liked to jump. The suspension sucked on the yamaha but damn it was fast. I use to smoke my friends 650 suzuki. Blacksmith
OK, it has was somewhere around 1982 when we did this, but I used to have a friend that lived in El Paso. My family went down there one time with a CJ-5 in tow. My friend and his dad took us out to a set of dunes that were only about 15-25 miles or so from the city. I remember that there was one large dune that had jeep tracks only about 2/3 of the way up. They told us that the big contest of the park was to try to climb that hill, and that almost no one had. I could not get my dad to try it. Anyway, they told up that the place was part of the White Sands Range that was not in an impact area and was open to the public. I have no idea how things stand today, but it was quite the place back then.
fixitrod
You won't get very far now
BenBB
Thanks Blacksmith, I know there's something down there, from what I've heard here and there it's mostly just sandy desert but there's gotta be some sandhills somewhere. I know Fort Bliss has an AA target range just north of El Paso along the Organ mountains, and Holloman has a bombing range in the vicinity also
fixitrod
We did use to take our bikes off road at trans mountain and behind some of the housing additions to climb the mountain sides. It was easier with bikes because you could just lay them down when you couldn't go any further, but I don't know of any dunes less than 20min from there.
