chris642
Hey, me and my friend want to buy a dirtbike to mess around on on trails and fields by his house. We are not sure what bike to get, either a 125 or 250, 2 stroke that is. Were both pretty new to bikes, I have some experience, not much though. would a 250 be too much, or would a 125 be better. Were also not sure what brand to get, if we were buying new, id say yz for sure since it has a 6 speed, but we are just doin this for fun, not racing and we want the most reliable of the bunch. So what should it be KX, RM, YZ, or CR? Edited October 10, 2004 by chris642
locogato11283
i would never buy anything but a honda cr. personally i hate 125's. id just go for a 250. or maybe a

chris642
you guys dont think it would be too much for a beginer?
stclark04
you guys dont think it would be too much for a beginer? nahh, they are easier to ride. more controlable. riding a 125 sucks in my opinion. you gotta be WOT all the time for it to go anywhere it seems. with a 250, you can still just putt around and have power. they are nice. Big Blue
I have friends with 250's a kx and a yz they both seem to be pretty good bikes i just prefer the yz because it is a yamaha. I also had another friend the had a wr400 and i was a great trail bike.
rjvoight
If you ar buying it for trail riding, go with any of the new 250 MX Four Strokes, ie KX250F or CRF250. If you are going to moto-x and want to race in the 250 class, go with the Honda CRF450. I race a KX 250 and it is a great bike, but the 4-bangers have come so far, they are just flat out easier to ride, especially if you have limited experiance. I would avoid a 125, you will out grow it. If money is an issue, look for a YZ400F, they are still stellar bikes and with the 426 and 450 now out you can pick one up at a good price. If you are hell bent on a two-stroke, and again if you are mainly going to ride it off road on trails and in the woods, I would go with a KTM EXC 250. Out of all of these bikes, if I was buying a new one now, I would by the CRF450 hands down. It is the strongest motor, best suspended and bes handling, but then again, my first love is MX...... Good Luck RJV
chris642
Thanks for the replies, i am hell bent on a 2 stroke. Ill look into that KTM, but my friends dad says we should get a CR. We will be practicing in trails and fields, but i ride in alot of sand, so if i feel like riding a bike instead of a quad, i want something that I will be able to put paddles on. We also are gonna race so i dont want the 250 4 stroke. I am looking for a 96-01 bike, so is the CR still the best?
banshee76179
you guys dont think it would be too much for a beginer? No, the 125 will be eventually be too small for him.. And definately a CR.. My buddy has a CR500 and it is insane....
iceman
My KX250 has a Pro Circuit pipe and rad valves. Just with those modifications, it flies. The power band hits hard. I can be over the gas tank and it still comes up, depending on how hard I'm on the throttle. It is a fun bike though. I like the CRs frames a lot better, they look and feel more stable. The KX's are known for their power though. It depends on your preferences though.
