racer
for 3500 you could probably find a good deal on an 00 maybe even newer, especially if its stock. just pick up the trader every thursday morning on your way to work.
Gargamel
Don't know where your from, but here a 01 - 02 is about $3500 for a stock one. I would always perfer new but if it's not likely because of funds then there's nothing wrong with getting a used one. Just check it real good so you know it's not a pile of junk. fixitrod
If you're going to fix one up anyway it really doesn't matter what year. I'd stay away from the j-arm frames...that's where the top front suspension is shaped as a J instead of an A. I think that's 1987 to 1989 but not really sure. Just buy one in good shape, good frame, bearings and whatever else you don't plan on changing.

Banshee_LyK_WoA
I found a 99 at a motorcycle shop with only 1hr ride time on it, and it looks like it is straight out of the box. I am paying 3000 for it. Yeh I know it is 5=6 years old but it looks brand new. So im sure you can find a good one for that amount.
