2stroker
I just installed a fresh set of Wiseco Prolites and got the motor put back together. I only now realized that I didn't pay attention to how the rings were installed on the piston. Can they be installed upside down? Or does it not matter? racer
yep, they can go in wrong. the grooved side of the ring goes up.
banshdog
I just put my topend back together yesterday, i am pretty sure that the info that came from wiseco said that the rings do not have a set orientation. now i am second guessing myself........ 2stroker
I dug through the trash looking for the install instructions but couldn't find them. I vaguely remember it saying it didn't matter. But I want to make sure BEFORE I fired her up. Banshdog, if you find your paperwork let me know what it says. fixitrod
Wiseco rings do not have a top and bottom. Some builders like to put the number side up but the instructions say it does not matter.
racer
i could have sworn i read on eric gorr's website that the rings did have a top and bottom. now i have to go back and re-read all of that stuff again. EDIT: go to this hyperlink and read step number six on the 11 tips for rebuilding 2stroke engines. Edited October 4, 2004 by therail

EDIT: go to this hyperlink and read step number six on the 11 tips for rebuilding 2stroke engines. This is number 6 6. Always install the rings on the piston with the markings facing up. Coat the rings with pre-mix oil so they can slide in the groove when trying to install the piston in the cylinder. That is what a lot of builders do. But, the instructions that come with wiseco pistons actually say there is no top or bottom. It's a small piece of paper with red writing on it. I probably still have one at the house. Oh, by the way, eric gorrs website is the shit for general motor questions. He really knows his shit. fixitrod
see, i wasnt totally wrong................................. Nope, you weren't wrong at all. There are a lot of diffent engines that the rings can only go one one way.
banshdog
PHEW! i was a lil bit scared and pissed for a min. I was pretty sure that i read it right. thanks for the info, now i dont have to worry all day at work. and thanks to 2stroker for the topic, perfect timing bro. even though ive already started the bike up oh yeah....... and what is all that business in the wiseco instructions about drilling holes into the pistons?? something about an exhaust bridge? call me stupid but, i dont know what they are talking about Edited October 4, 2004 by banshdog
bkabina
Some bikes have an exhaust bridge, which you don't unless you have aftermarket sleeves like the viper sleeves. The bridge is to help the piston ring or rings to not get caught on the exhaust opening. racer
whoa, dont think ive ever seen an exhaust bridge on a shee before. i wonder why they want you to dril holes for it though?
2stroker
They ask that you drill holes only if there's an exhaust bridge. I think........ Thanks for all the replies.
