Need Help.

Hi Guys. THis is my first post on this awsome website. Unfortunatly its not one I wish I had to make.

Ive got a 2003 Banshee with PSI pipes, K&N filter, 21cc domes and billit head, Boost bottle, boyceen reeds, and a dynoport carb jetting kit (the one that comes with the longer needle valve.)

Heres the problem. When i look at the bike idle i only see exhaust smoke comming out of the one side of the bike, yet compression is the same in both and as far as I can tell the carbs are in perfect sync but im going to double check. So before I tear it all apart i want to hear what you guys have to say about the other problems.

1. It has a very unstable idle. It wont come down to idle all the time, it likes to keep reving out. I think i need a bigger pilot jet since im still running stock. Do you guys agree?

2. Just recently when you hit the powerband at idle the bike will just say in the powerband and even turning the key wont shut if off. Im guessing that the clip needs to be set richer because its running lean.

3. THe bike surges power its not smooth like a stock banshee is. Im guessing its all carburation problems.

However the bike runs for the most part very well. But these are the few flaws i want to get fixed up.

I hope someone on here can help whos gone thru the same thing.

PS.

This bike used to pull one bike lengh each shift on a DS650. Now ever since it started this reving out detonation, The DS650 will pull on me a little with each shift. My question is can running to lean, even though the bike feels fast and high reving, make less power in certain situations.

I dont care about beating the DS650, I just want this bike to perform the best it can in its layout.

Thanks a lot.

Martin.

This is caused by a few things. Either you have an airleak somewhere, there is something wrong with the synchronization tube that connects the 2 carbs together or your idle screws arent set up properly.

Or (this is what I think it is) your pilot jets are plugged. When you choke the bike it should idle better right? The revving means you're lean and not getting enough fuel and too much air when idiling. Turn your air screws ont he carbs in all the way, and turn them both 2 turns out. Then screw your idle speed screws ont he top of the carbs in all the way and start at 3 turns out. Of its revving then unscrew them the same until it idles right. If its bogging then screw them in till it idles right.

Don't do this until you check airleaks and your pilot jets. Pilot jets would be the first thing to check because mine does this quite often and I just tek them out and take the air compressor to them and it fixes the idle problem.

This is called dieseling it's when your running so fucking lean that the plugs get so hot you dont ened a spark anymore the plugs are hot enough to ignite the fuel on their own. when this happens turn your petcock off or hold your hand over the airbox and flood it to make the engine quit. this is really really bad dude youre running lean.

3. THe bike surges power its not smooth like a stock banshee is. Im guessing its all carburation problems.

Yes it sounds like it is. Take the carbs apart, and get some clean rags and tear those bastards apart and take the carb cleaner to them. take every jet, screw everything off and clean it and put it back together. If this just started happening its prolly just dirty carbs.

just pray to your god(s) that you never hurt the engine any

I agree with these guys, I would definitely get some 30 pilots, start with the airscrews 1.5 turns out, and THEN check for air leaks. Make sure the choke tube is in place between the carbs (I'm assuming stock carbs). You should be able to adjust the airscrews from there and the idle speed if necessary to get a clean idle and off-idle response (if you're at a very high elevation or at an extreme of premix ratio you may need one size larger or smaller on the pilot, but 30's should get you pretty close for now).

Once you get the pilot/airscrew circuit dialed in (primarily only from idle to about 1/8 throttle), I'd double check your mains (do a plug chop if you can) for about 3/4 throttle to WOT, and then if you have any bog or hesitation from about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle try adjusting the needle clip position. Usually reeds will want a little leaner clip position than the stock middle position (3rd on a 5-groove needle) but with your new needles you may just have to try different settings and see which one works best. Out of curiousity, what mains are you running now? Good luck.

Hey guys thanks alot.

First off. I dont think its an air leak or dirty carbs. I built this motor from the ground up and I know about the symptoms a pluged carb would make. Thats why im asking for help. I cant figure it out. LOL

I think the 30 pilots will help the unstable idle. There in the mail.

But the dieseling is what I cant figure out. This engine never had a bog passed Idle and it still doesnt just off Idle.

I dont understand why it would never diesel and then start all of a sudden. Its almost like some ass tinkered with my needle clip or maybe somthing did plug the carbs.

But im not going to take it apart till I get the parts. Thanks for your help and if you can think of anything else let me know. :)
