What do you use

Recommended Posts

I was just curious to know what you guys use to make videos of riding and such on your computer...I've been using this program made by Dazzle called Moviemaker5 which works great it just makes the file size freakin huge. banghead I tried using Windows moviemaker2 but it doesn't like capturing the video from my capture card...Also another concern is when I make a video and shrink it to a reasonable download size, the quality is absolute shit...I keep seeing these videos that are fairly small and good quality and I just want to know what you use if you're not having issues like mine. I have some helmet cam footage on my shee that I'd like to share with you guys but I don't think you wanna download a 50-70MB file :whoa: Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Well first of all, Do you have a DV cam, or is it HI8? If you have a DV cam just use a FireWire port/card to capture your video. Seeing as though you are saying you are capturing with a Card (dazzle) it tells me that you have an older non DV cam. Anyway, RAW DV footage in the DV-AVI format takes up 13GB per hour of footage. Your dazzle card probably only captures at like 380X240 instead of the full size of 720X480. Anyway, i use Adobe Primere for capture and editing, and final conversion to MPEG. TMPGEnc makes a very good MPEG encoder, and Windows Movie maker works quite nicely for a free program. A Decent compression ratio would be about 2 to 1 with a bitrate of 705,000

Check out the 2 vids i have on quicksand

Vids

If you want to know the exact settings for those vids let me know.

I have a Hi-8 cam, it's the Sony trv-917...It has an s-video hookup but I don't think that would make much difference as far as capturing goes. I do have the dazzle capture card which wasn't the "best" out there; when I bought it I was using a really cheap camera so the high quality hardware wasn't needed. Do you recommend I get a better capture device? Would that help in getting better sizing on the vids? I really appreciate your help on this CombatTalon, this issue has been driving me nuts!!!

Oh, and the setting for the vids would be nice...THANKS!!

you would get slightly better end product using S-video if your capture card allows you to use it

You would probably be better off going with a Camcorder that is Digital8 or MiniDV, then you dont have to use a capture card at all since its already Digital. Anyway, if your card captures at the smaller frame size, you have a smaller amount of Information to compress, so the results will not be great, but still should be able to produce something similar to what you see on my vids.

Anyway, the settings on my Vids are

Encoded with WMV(Windows Media Video) codec, which should be included with your Windows Movie maker with a bitrate of about 700,000 bits and a 320X240 frame size

or Adobe MPEG codec with a frame size of 320X240 to keep the size down

Just checked windows movie maker...you can export in the WMV format, just use "high quality video Small" which is under the menu when you click on "finish movie" save to my computer.

Also you can capture with your card/software, then Import it into Windows Movie maker.

Its hard explaining this on a forum! but it will work, and you will get decent results, just takes some time messing with it-trust me!

yep, its easy once you get going. I guess the most important aspect is that once you upload your video it will be a big AVI or MPEG file. If you have a choice, capture in AVI (uncompressed, better quality) then Import the Video into Windows movie maker. Once you are done editing, save the completed time line and export to Video by Saving to your computer, and selecting "high Quality-Small" that should work for ya! It worked for me, and the image quality was good! good luck, i will be around tonight if you have any questions just PM me and we can get on MSN messenger if you like!

Lets see imovie and then on over to idvd to burn it onto dvd...oh wait, that's only on the mac. Dunno what your budget is like, but you can get a decent mini dv like that canon ZR40/45/50 etc. for about $400 or so. Then you could probably sell your dazzle for at least some decent money. I think those dazzle things are like $160 or something. Best part about those canons is that they have a video in/out. That way you can buy one of those little lipstick cams and use that as a helmet cam rather than a huge camera bolted to your head. You can just keep the canon in your backpack and have the wires running up to the helmet.

Thanks for the responses guys! :) Wallrat, that's kinda what I'm doing with the exception of the DV Camcorder. I bought one of those bullet cams for the helmet and I run my camcorder in the backpack..Bring it home and hook the camcorder up through the capture card and import my video. My main problem is just making a video small and keeping the quality as well. I think my best bet from reading these posts and from the experiences I'm having, I just need to go out and get a DV cam...probably the same one you guys are recommending. I'm going to try and get my hands on a few more programs to try out before I break it down and get another camcorder; I really hope I can find a cheaper alternative!!! I got some pretty cool footage I'd like to be able to share B)
