Thread pattern for frame bolts?

Recommended Posts

I am about to get my new frame powdercoated, and was wondering if anyone has a clue as to the general thread pitch?? Last time I had a frame powdercoated, they pushed in these little red things taht are supposed to be heat proof. Yeah, sure. This time, I would like to put bolts in all the holes to save the threads....

What should I do........I need some more opinions on what to do???

Later,

Don't think putting the bolts in the holes is a good idea. The powdercoating will cover the bolts & you'll end up having to cut around the bolt on every hole,or it will tear the powdercoating up when you take the bolts out.I'm not sure of the pitches but thinking 1.25 or 1.5 on most. From what I've heard most people just leave the holes open & retap.Should be able to get taps pretty cheap.

Yeah...like he said,...it's a PITA if you and can lead to chipping a bit. I would just let them plug them, would be your best bet. Or ask around & see what people use and say is the best, buy some and do it yourself. If it were me though, I would just let them do it & make sure they do it right. Unless they don't have a clue WTF they're really doing, you should be just fine.

I always just run a tap through the holes after it is powdercoated.

If I remember correctly the only places you have to make sure they mask off is the stub where the rear brake lever slides on, and the bore where the steering stem bearing fits and the swingarm bolt slides through.

There is only about 4 different tap sizes in the frame.

i would say that most of the frame bolts are M8 with 1.25 or 1.5 pitch. there are some bigger ones like the footpeg bolts tho. the guy that powdercoats my shit puts bolts in all the spots then right after the frame comes out he unscrews them out. it looks fine and then you dont have to worry about it chipping. you could also just run a tap thru them all.
