J.J. Posted September 2, 2004 Report Share Posted September 2, 2004 I'm using the most basic Garmin e-trex, works great, costs about 90-100 bucks. I use it in my truck, on the quad and on my mountain bike. The handle bar clamps are about 12 bucks and the car holder a bit more. Only 2 complaints: 1)I use the speed feature the most on my quad (ave, max, odo, trip, etc) and I found that the digits are too small to read when you're barely in control of the quad and only have a split second to glance down. The higher models, Venture, Legend, etc, have larger size digits that would make it easier to read. 2) The batteries are sensitive to big hits and the power will be cut off if they move, I just shim the batteries against the cover with a piece of paper to overcome this. Never had a problem with the water proofing. The rest of the features are more than adequate for quad use, like track back, auto track log, waypoints, elevation, etc. Here's a pic to show how small the digits are. Hope this helps. dnhyoung Posted September 6, 2004 Report Share Posted September 6, 2004 Me and a few of my buddies recently invested in a couple of the Garmin Rino's 120. I have to say they Kick some serious ass. They not only have the GPS features, but they also are radios, and you can track the other guys on your channel. We gave them a pretty good run for their money last weekend and they worked flawlessly. Thanks for the link to the imsproducts site, those are pretty cool! To be honest, so far I haven't had a problem with that clamping arrangement and most of the time it's mounted to the quad or the mountain bike. Touch wood. Wallrat Posted September 13, 2004 Report Share Posted September 13, 2004 I just keep the lanyard on the gps and slip that on the opposite handlebar from the handlebar mount for a little insurance. I've ridden HARD with that bike mount and its never even hinted at coming off. No problems with batteries coming loose either. I've got the legend too. Also, if you're looking for a car holder, check ebay. I got a mount and a cig. adapter for half the price of the car kit at REI. You can't beat the etrex series if you ride sand. It'll display an arrow pointing to whatever waypoint you want. As you ride around, the arrow will continue to point towards your destination.
