Fusion Paint & Maier Fenders

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anybody has had any luck with painting Maier Fenders? I bought new fenders and wanted to paint flames on them with Krylon Fusion paint. I first tied this paint on a piece of Lexan plexiglass and it worked great. It wouldn't flake or chip off. I bent it until it broke and it still didn't flake off. Yet when I painted the flames on even after proper prepping it flakes right off. Are these fenders paintable or what???

did you wipe them down with anything before painting them?there might hav been a wax or silicone on them, and it isnt going to stick to that stuff.always wipe plastic down with laquer thinner before sanding and after.sanding something that has a film on it will just drive the residue deeper in to the substrate.

that paint sucks. i sprayed a set of blue fenders here not to long ago and it looked like shit. i sanded them and the paint didnt wanna stick for shit. i cleaned them and everything but it didnt help. hell one time i used some cheap ass gloss black wal mart paint on a fender and it looked better than fusion.

From my experience, I would not use Fusion paint again...If I were to ever paint my plastics again, I would sand em down, primer them with a good primer, and paint them with a good quality paint from a spray gun...not a rattle can. Definitely use a flex agent, and follow it with multiple clear coats for protection...I used the Fusion paint which didn't do too bad, but came off the bottom of the rear fenders with the quickness because of all the sand/rocks/mud that was slung up on them. And when it did start to peel off in other areas, it would have a "ripple" effect and then it turned scary...I'm in the market for new plastics now cause it didn't really work out... :(

Just me .02 for ya

If you can get the paint to stick, add some flex agent to the paint mix and that should stop the flaking etc....

Adding flex will do NOTHING for adheasion and will NOT stop it from flaking off.

Cleaning maier plastic with an acetone will only make things worse. The plastic used to make those fenders has a lot of release agent in it. When you wiped it down w/ the acetone it actually pulls more release agent to the surface. Kinda like trying to paint over oil. It just aint gonna happen. There are chemicals out there to clean and treat the surface, it also aids in adheasion. I stand behind what Bigboybanshee said and state that if you want a quality job that will hold up great and last many years then do the job the right way and NOT will a buzz bomb spray can. I do this for a living and trust me when I say it..... Nothing good ever comes out of a spray can.

I can't remember where but I read something about painting fenders a while ago. It said that sanding and painting stock fenders worked well but it was very hard to get anything to stick to the Maier fenders for some reason.

Yes Maier plastic can be painted... but with a shit ton of work. It is my site that has all the info on painting plastic. I have withheld posting the info to do maier plastic, due to the amount of time/effort involved. (not worth doing in my opinion)

I would post a link but for some reason my site is down.

What u are saying is true...flex agent will not help it adhere....my bad but..it will help it later after its painted. If you roll your fender for some reason, its not as likely to crack and flake as bad....Don't get me wrong, it won't stop it but it will help...

I've used it lots in other plastic painting application. And also for the price of it, why not mix it in with the paint!
