Head Ruined?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

My Shee has been running like crap lately, I found that both boots for the Boost bottle were torn and my right cylinder compression is 60. I took off the head and it looks like a small part of the piston broke off and must have been setting between the head and the top of the piston. They are both a little scared up.

I am going to put new pistons in, but does anyone know what would happen if I took a grinder and cleaned up the head, because I really can't afford to buy a new head right now.

Also, does anyone know about how much the boots for the boost bottle cost?

Thanks,

If you grind the domes your gonna loose a lot of compression. You can get a head for around $25 on ebay sometimes. Somebody on here might have one to sell you cheap also. Good people here. Another option is to have that head cut and re-domed for some more compression. You can get it done for around $80. That way you gain some power while you are are it.

Make sure there isn't any debris in the crank. If the crank goes out after your rebuild you will be in deep doo doo.. lol. It will take the new pistions, bore and head with it.

when i broke the piston skirt on my previous motor i found no tracces of anything. until one day i looked into the silencer and there it was. tons and tons of aluminum that had been ground to the size of rock salt.

so check there ;)

The dings in the squish band and dome of the head won't actually hurt anything, they just look like crap. Take a hone stone or file and lightly remove the places that are dinged and just clean it up a bit. Don't damage or file outside of the dome & squish area, otherwise your gasket probably won't seal correctly.

If you have the $$ have the head milled and rechambered for more HP, this will also get rid of any marks from the pieces of the piston that came apart.

I took my head and to the local shop here. They told me the marks are caused when the crank bearing starts to go out, no if's ands or buts. They said they have seen it a thousand times and not to put new pistons and rings in beacause it will last for about a half an hour without replacing the crank. :yank:

I think they might be trying to rip me off.

I went home and turned the crank by hand and looked at the bearings, they looked fine, there is a little play in the arm when you move it side to side, but none up and down. I think that is normal.

Is there any way to tell if you crank is going bad, without splitting the case?

Thanks eveyone for your replies.

On the last trip of last season...my bike started to smoke really bad out of one pipe. When I got home I took off my coolhead...and noticed that that side was really really pitted with metal all around the bore of the cylinder...even scratched up my bores. Upon further investigation, my main bearing on my crank grenaded! There was metal everywhere once I pulled off the clutch cover. That is where I could see my bearing in peices. Easy to check that out. I ended up splitting my cases...and there was metal inside there too :(

If I were you, I would pull off the clutch cover and look at the main bearing of the crank.

Good Luck!

T :whoa:

Thanks,

i have a stock head sitting in the garage $15 shipped it is a little pitted but you could have boonman cut it and hell be able to clean the pits out as well.

Pits in the head can be caused/are caused by debris in the combustion chamber. WHether it is from a bearing coming apart, or from a piston breaking, a ring, or whatever. I had a crank bearing failure. It sucked. I still ran the head after rebuild though. And you can look at the outer bearings on the crank by removing the side cover(s), but the inner bearings you need to split the case open to inspect..... If you had any sort of debris in the combustion chamber, more than likely, (like 95%) it came through the transfer ports. WHich means that it was near, or on the crank, and the bearings.... Which would be enough for me to split the cases and be absolutely sure before I wasted the whole motor on something that could have been prevented.....

I think I will take off the side covers and see if I can see anything wrong. By the inner bearings, are they the ones where the rods hook to? Because looking from the top of the motor, they look pretty good to me, but I really do not know what to look for.

Is it pretty tough to split the case? I just don't want to get in over my head and break even more things. I have enough things broke on it right now.
