Engine rebuild - Advice please!

Recommended Posts

My 01 Banshee broke a ring and has wrecked the piston and barrel.

Can anyone help with advice on whether to resleeve and put original size

Yamaha pistons in, or rebore and put aftermarket larger pistons in?

(At present it has 64.5mm pistons, which are largest Yamaha pistons)

Also the Dealer has recomended that I replace the crank, as they feel

it is worth doing it now. Is this correct and that they can't measure

or chech the crank to see how good/bad it is?

Someone also mentioned one can rebuild the crank, instead of a complete

new one? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?

Does anyone know what a complete new Banshee engine costs in the US?

This job, to do top and bottom end in South Africa is going to cost

about US$1500. Is this much less than a new engine?

I will really appreciate any help

holy shit 1500! you could get a hot crank n rods and a big bore for about 800, do the job yourself its really not to hard, pick up a manual. they can true your crank but they have to take it out of the cases to do so, and if its ok, i say you get it welded to

Well the crank part is true, by the time you replace all the bearings, rods and inner/outer webs you're looking at alot of money and it's cheaper to go with an aftermarket welded crank that has rebuildable inner webs (the part that holds the connecting rod on).

To check the crank you need to split the motor and pull it out and have a dial to see if its trued. But from what youre saying your crank is fine and that guy is trying to rip you off!

I just did a complete engine rebuild, bore out both cylinders, plane the head, and new crank and connecting rods. I live in canada and this is how much it cost me:

Wiseco crank assembly with hot rods - 640.00

Bore cylinders and plane head with mild porting - 170.00

Wiseco piston kit (64.5 mm pistons, head gasket, base gaskets, reed gaskets, water pump gaskets and rings circlips wrist pins and wrist pin bearings) - 320.00

Clymer manual - 40.00

If I were you I would just bore it out .20 thou more over and go with a wiseco piston kit. Youre maybe looking at 400 bucks and thats canadian pricing stuff is cheaper in the states.

I hope this helps.

Hi Guys,

Thanx for all the advice so far. I am getting some prices from other dealers in SA, and might find something better, otherwise maybe I should buy the gear in the US and ship it out here.

Prices here certainly are scary, compared to what you guys are paying for the stuff there.

Will let you'all know how I get on,

Cheers, Percy-Zn
