Brooke
agreed blue. i remember when i was in high school and worked for a landscaping company....holy shit that was some hard physical labor. but...i worked my eight or ten hours a day and went home, free to do or think about whatever i want. when you run your own business, youre always working 24/7 even in your sleep. i barely sleep as it is, but when i do finally get in bed i lay there thinking about everything i need to do the next day, next week next year to make my business a success. it takes a lot of sacrifice, it would be much easier for me to say f*ck it, and go get a job someplace, but instead, im 24, live back with my parents so i can invest every penny i own, and every second of my life to making this a success. but it will all be worth it in the end. i have an aunt who has worked at Kmart forever, works like 60 hours a week, and fucking loves her job. shes one of the happiest people i know, and i envy her like you wouldnt believe. me on the other hand, ive always been miserable, and always will be no matter what. so i figure i might as well be miserable with lots of designer bags and diamonds and a zillion apple computers. o yea, and a couple hard bodied cabana boys. I agree. Being part of a family business that has for the most part been moderately successful, successful enough to endear several very large hardships, has literally taught me the value of my life. I am in total control of what I do from sun up to sun down, and I choose everyday that I will give that business 100% of me until I leave that evening. I've worked 12 hour days 6 days per week for 3 months straight to get the work done before. It was what was needed of me, and I did it. The parts are also a part of me. They represent the hard work, and skill that I have earned and learned over the years, and my willingness to use those skills. Starting a second business has humbled me quite a bit. I know now what my parents went through when they didn't have "real" jobs, still managed to feed us kids, hell, even put in a swimming pool so we wouldn't bug them to take us places so they could get all their work done, all at the same time funding a growing business. We had hard times when my mom had to buy my shoes at KMart on sale when I was 6 (yeah...she actually had to wait for an $8 pair of shoes to go on sale), and great times when the money literally rained down on us. One morning I woke up as usual and went out into the shop when I was about 8 (in the back yard) to see what my parents were doing. They had been working for 27 hours. The job they had needed to get done in a hurry so they did it. I have the utmost respect for my parents and those like them that will do what it takes to get what they want in life. To this day I have never donated a single dime to a homeless person that was out on the bum looking for change. (someone that has lost their house to a disaster is quite different) They have control over their lives just like I do. I choose to keep what I have earned....which in a sense, money is a direct representation of what I have accomplished that week/month/year etc.....If I don't have enough money, I work harder. I have found also that I can harvest my "free" time. I rarely watch TV, I don't go out and party away a weekend (unless its at the dunes) and when I'm at work I might take 2 breaks, but most days I take an hour and 15 minutes for lunch. 8am until around 5 is the work day, sometimes alot later. What really pisses me off, is there are a few people I know around here (where I live, not the HQ) that have said shit to others about me, such as I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and "I wish my dad would pay me to stand around" well....those fuckers are the lazy asses. They are the ones staring up at heaven through the bottom of a glass rather than dealing with and accepting their shitty lives and doing something about it. I sum it up in one easy sentence: I may have been given the tools...BUT NO ONE MADE ME LEARN HOW TO USE THEM, AND NO ONE MAKES ME USE THEM!! A spoiled kid is the kid that is given the tools, but doesn't ever need to use them. The kid that gets the work handed to him by someone else. Blue Duece
i barely sleep as it is, but when i do finally get in bed i lay there thinking about everything i need to do the next day, next week next year to make my business a success. it takes a lot of sacrifice, it would be much easier for me to say f*ck it, and go get a job someplace aint that the truth, i can remember falling asleep at my desk staring at the phone waiting for it to ring with a booking, afraid to leave the studio for fear the phone would ring and i wouldnt be there to take the call, and then as your biz grows so does the bills, now i have people work for me so im responsible to see that they have pay checks and insurance and all the shit that goes with that, when its slow they still need to be paid, its allways feast or famine, alot of my friends tell me how "lucky" i am...... i get to work 20 hours a day, if my biz dont do at least 100g's a month im hawkin shit to pay bills, after everyone else i come first, i can never make any personal plans that i can stick too, although luck is a product of design, i think it takes more balls than anything, i could go work for just about any film or recording studio and make a good living, but id just be punching someones clock, all the insperation it takes to create a good product for my clients would be gone, all the engineers and producers in my feild that get grammys and tech awards are freelance, just like im sure all the best grafic design artist's are, something about having your nuts on the chopping block inspires a person

Brooke
dude, thats EXACTLY what im doing now lol just starting to contract work out through me to other people so i can have more time to do the bigger things, but still keep the clients to myself lol. im able to get into more and more things, build a huge range of skills, and keep growing and growing, adding key people to my arsenol, be it a reliable graphics person or a skilled coder who charges less than industry norm. pay some guy the $40/hour he charges, thinking hes big time, for work that i charge the client $80-$100/hour for. then turn the money around back into the business. all the while my clients are incredibly happy cause not only do they get my full attention on their project, but they pay increadibly less with me cause i have no overhead costs whatsoever, and i dont have a million pee-ons and a bunch of micro managing going on to inflate the prices and dilute the details of client wishes like the big agencies do. everybody wins now i just have to decide what my next business purchase will be.... Blue Duece
my clients are incredibly happy.... they get my full attention on their project thats what built my biz, i havent ever spent a dime advertizing.......when the new g-5 laptops hit you'll probally need to get one, ya know for going to clients and showing them how there project is coming along, you might need to lease a nice car as well, hell once yer rolling the list dont stop of neat shit you can right off your taxes.......oh and not to change the topic Kerry even looks like he's a polesmoker Edited August 19, 2004 by Blue Duece

PUSH THE THROTTLE
I don't have my own business but I am trying to come up with what I want to do for a business in the future. Right now I have a good job as a mechanical engineer working with offshore marine cranes used in the oil industry. I work hard for my money and I would rather support people buy buying their stuff than giving it to the government to give to people without jobs, I have no problem with people who are seriously looking and want to work my problem is with the people that don't want to work because they get checks in the mail everymonth. This week I have already done my part to support the economy by buying a frame from yamaha, arms from Quicksand and shocks from Elka I'd say I'm helping out and making myself happy at the same time. kenr74
Sometimes I feel like we are voting for the lesser of two morons. I will be voting for Bush though because although he may not be the most articulate person, he does what he says. He has values and he knows what they are. The last thing we need is somebody in charge that can't decide whether or not they voted for a war. Kerry will say what people want to hear and then move on to the next group and say something completely different just to get a vote. What this country really needs is to wake the f*ck up. Kick all illegal imigrants out. If they don't leave on their own then it is open season, I need the target practice anyway. Then shut down most of welfare. Welfare was intended as a crutch for people in temporary need not to be a lifestyle. Those lazy bastards can take the jobs that the illegals are no longer at. We need to start taking responsibility for ourselves and not relying on the government to do everything for us. MOST lawyers should be taken out and shot. We should go to an eye for an eye punishment system. If you are convicted of murder you die that day. No appeals, no crying to momma. Gays can do whatever they want in private. Marriage is for a man and a woman. This would disqualify most liberals including Kerry from being married. Last, if any other country gives us shit we should kick their ass until there is nothing left. We would have to do that only once, then the rest of the world would learn to walk the straight line. Enough said.

Brooke
MOST lawyers should be taken out and shot. yea, like edwards who started the whole skyrocketing healthcare costs by suing doctors for malpractice in cerebral-palsy cases. if you know anyone in the medical field who knows their shit, then you know that it was never really a widely accepted theory that CP was caused by doctors not giving c-sections or not giving them soon enough. since then malpractice insurance has skyrocketed along with healthcare costs, and more and more women are getting c-sections, which is usually an unnecessary surgery and puts the mother at an unnecessar risk. edwards even channeled the dead babies in court " Edwards told the jury, "She said at 3, 'I'm fine.' She said at 4, 'I'm having a little trouble, but I'm doing O.K.'...At 5:30, she said, 'I need out.'" His closer: "She speaks to you through me...I feel her presence. She's inside me, and she's talking to you." Edwards's clients won a $6.5 million verdict in that cerebral-palsy case and Edwards went on to win over $60 million in about 20 similar lawsuits over allegedly botched deliveries against doctors and hospitals. His share of the verdicts was typically about a third." sinful
