Too Lean?

Recommended Posts

yes the top is lean. the bottom looks about right. yes your plugs can read different. if one of your carbs is a little plugged or dirty it can happen. id pull the carbs and clean them real well then try again. use a new set of plugs when you do it. oh yea, make sure the jetting is the same on both sides.

Best time to look at your plugs is after a wot run to 5th or 6th gear, like your dragging, but just kill the motor with the throttle still pinned, pull the clutch and stop. Doing it this way will give you a true main jet reading and could look completely different, no matter how "hard" you were riding, just coasting to a stop really quick could alter the color a lot.

as a side note, if i were u, id go to ur local advanced auto and get u some EV's. ES's are shitty plugs in my opinion.. thats what they put in stock banshees. get u some hotter plugs..

Why would u say hotter plugs? The BR8ES's are actually good plugs, there are guys draggin 110+hp shees with BR8ES's. I run BR8EIX's honestly, but I think I'm gonna go back to the BR8ES's because they're much more predictable in my opinion. The V's, for those that don't know, are a gold tipped electrode. If your gonna go that route, you might as well get the Iridium's if your after a better spark. The quality level goes gold - platinum - iridium.

Also, if you look at that second pic and see where the color change takes place on the ground strap, you'll see that the color changes right in the middle of the bend. That is a spot-on perfect position and tells me that heat range fits it perfectly. I'm not sure whether the first plug is lean or didn't color very well, and to verify, I'd have him run the WOT test and then see what the color looks like.

sredish, we have always run the EV series plugs in all our bikes. they seem to be a little snappier. ive run stock plugs and then switched to EV's and preferred them better. as a matter of fact thats about the only plug anyone runs here. i dont know all the specs on plugs nor do i want to, i just like the EV's better. how much are those EIX's anyway? are those the ones that are like 7 bucks a piece? the EV's are like 3 something a piece and thats enough for me.

yeah, my iridiums are $7 to $8 depending on where you go, and they do have a little more snap, but the color reading, to me anyways, is a little more unpredictable due to the SupaSpark. I've been having some "issues" with my jetting, not too bad, but I think I'm gonna be running some ES's for a little while, to get back to basics, if you know what I mean.

Later.

yea i know what you mean. i had a kid out here the other day that hadsome es's in his banshee. no matter how long he rode it for we couldnt get an accurate reading on the plugs. i gave him some ev's to try and when he came back we had a good accurate reading. i dont know if his were just shit or what but the ev's gave us a good coloring on the plugs. whats up with your jetting anyway? its not running right?

well, i'm running a bigger main than I should be. It doesn't look super lean, but I don't have near the color I'd like, so it worries me. It runs really good, and it colors great in the midrange throttle, but my WOT is just a little lighter than I'd like and I'm afraid of putting a hole in my piston. :) I've checked a hundred different times for air leaks and can not find one anywhere.

I'm going to go back to the ES's because I have much more experience reading them, and then play with it some more. If all else fails, I'm going to grab one of my other main jets and start drilling to see how far she wants to go before fouling and that should give me an idea of where she's at now with my present jet.

BTW. Single carb, Fatty pipes, no internal work, VForce Reeds, ProFlo Uni, timing and some other little doodad shit and I'm running a 230 main. Biggest I can get for my Keihen. I should be around 180 or 190. The SOB will freaking run hard though, seriously, I can hang with some I feel I shouldn't be able to. My comp. is 125 even on both, lower than I'd like, but...

Anyway, I'll keep riding till I get it or she blows, but I'll have fun either way. :D

sredish, why are you running a 230 main? was it not running right with the 180. How did the plugs look with the 180? I just put a 2-1 trinity on my bike. Not that impressed so far, have only ridden it once. My stockers seem to pull just as good on the bottom and a lot more on top. Your comp. seems good for stock. Wouldn't think you would need such a big main though. Let me know what's up with that, I'm still in the 180 range.

hes got a couple of K&N stickers so that his jugs flow better, plus the hella lights. so you gotta figure that stuff into your jetting :shootself:
