Broken off bolts

Recommended Posts

You need to go to sears or most any hardware store and get an "ease out" or screw extractor. Looks kinda like a square shaped (tapered) center punch with sharp cutting edges. You will need to get the appropriate size according to what size the broken bolt is, close enough will work, doesn't have to be exact. You will need to also get the appropriate size drill bit for the screw extractor. You drill into the shaft of the broken bolt as centered as possible and however far is needed so the screw extractor will go into the hole. Give it a very light tap to wedge it in the hole. Use a socket and wratchet and turn the screw extractor very slow and steady at first. You will feel it bite into the metal of the bolt shaft and get real solid. Hopefully as you apply some pressure the bolt will break free and turn out easily after that point. A good idea is to spray some penetrating solvant type oil on it first to help loosten it up. WD-40, free all, KY, somthing like that. Good Luck
