Street Legalizing the Shee

Recommended Posts

Street Legalizing the Shee....Has it been done? I dont think it has....at least not here in CA. In fact everyone that I talk to about doin it pretty much laughs it off.

I want to get on the road...so Im either gonna legalize the shee....or buy something in the 600 range.

I called the CA DMV. they say I need a brake and light certificate.....and a Highway Patrol vehicle inspection.

I then called the HP, they say I need an approved headlamp, horn, mirror, front and rear blinkers, tires for the pavement, insurance, and a motorcycle license. He also said there was a sound test...but he didnt know what the decible level was.

I havent called the brake and light guys yet....tomorrow.

Sounds dooable to me.....

I gotta find out some more....

Anyone know where I can get me some pavement tires....or who makes um.

Or better yet anyone know of some car tires that will fit the shee wheels.....lol.

Also, blinker kits.....I was thinking just add a battery and keep the blinker system seperate...that way I dont have to upgrade the electricle system.

Anyone done this before?

I don't have a clue about the legislation in CA, but, my bike is street legal here in South Africa.

I have small enduro bike style indicators, no battery. The indicators flash faster as the bike revs up.

I bought my bike new from Yamaha and asked them to install the indicators, so not too sure where they took the power from, prolly the tail light power leads. As the vehicle was purchased new from the dealer, it didn't have to go through any roadworthy inspections at the time.

I was pulled over regularly in the beginning, but now they leave me alone.

I also have a street legal Banshee (I live in the Netherlands). It's a hassle to do an costs a lot over here ($2500 - $3000), but it's definately worth it.

Anyway, there was post about this on the old forums. If I can remember right there are about 5 states where it is possible to get your ATV street legal. Wyoming is one of them, but I'm not sure about the other four. I believe that in Wyoming all you need is a horn, 2 front lights, a taillight and a speedo.

There used to be a guy on the internet that sold kits to make your Banshee street legal. It included a new swingarm so that you could turn your Banshee into a three wheeler (1 rear wheel). However, I don't know his sites' URL.

In Cali? With their laws??? i doubt it.

Did you tell the person from the Highway Patrol, that it was a 2 stroke and not a four stroke quad? That alone, i would think, would be reason enough for it not to be street legal.

another factor is the VIN number. newer ones(2 strokes) dont have enough digits in the VIN, for DMV to recognize. (must have a certin amount of letters/numbers)

At least that is the way it is here, and i know you guys are a lot more strict, when it comes to emmisions regulations and stuff.

Why would you want to ride the banshee on the street anyway? It's too wide to split lanes, so you end up stiiing in traffic anyway...and you know how our bikes love to sit at idle...

If you want a get a 2 stroke for the street, get a little Aprilia RS50..:headbang:

Arizona is one of them. All you need is headlight/tail light/horn/mirror Thats it! no turn signals, spedometer, special tires or anything. One of my friends has a street legal raptor and rides it all the time on the streets in Tucson.

Damn, that is sweet. I've been wanting to do that for so long. Always thinking about it. Maybe one day. Do you really need blinkers though, I've seen pickups that had less blinkers.

I've ridden several street legal ATV's and IMO opinion there isn't a better quad for street use than the Banshee. It's mostly about top-end on the road and nothing can beat the Banshee in the top-end area. You just have to avoid the busy parts of town.

Only downside I can think of is the noise. Every cop that hears me pulls me over and they all ask ''Is this exhaust system legal?'' ''Yes, officer. It made it through the RDW (Dutch DMV) with it, so it must be.'' They fall for it everytime. :D

CoolBTW that it's also possible make your Banshee street legal in Arizona. If you have the chance, I would definately do it. There's nothing like the face of the people at McDonalds when you run your Banshee through the McDrive. :D

I want it mainly to get back and forth from work....I live out by Mather Airforce Base.....and work on the other side of it. No lights and no traffic. Just straight curving roads. I would love to get my shee on them.

Also, does anyone know where I can get some tires for her. I sooo wanna do this.... I will keep you posted.....

I need to find out what the sound limit is here in CA. The vehicle code book should tell me but I cant find it online, and Im def not going to buy one.

That shee out of Oregon with the R1 engine it must absolutely scream. I wish I could fabricate and engineer that type of ride.....
