Blew Up My Top End

Recommended Posts

Was out riding, doing like 70mph down a dirt road. One cylinder stopped firing, and the other just started to POUR out white smoke. I shut it off, and it would never start again. Ended up walking 3 miles back to the house to get the truck. Got back home and tore the top end down. Get this... One piston has a CHUNK missing out of it, and was tore all to hell. The cylinder walls on that side looked like someone took a hammer to it and just beat it all up. The other side seemed fine, could use a glaze break, but nothing bad. I am going into the bottom end this weekend to get all the nifty little chunks of metal out no doubt.

I ride an 87 banshee, that has been bored .08 over, and can't be bored any more. I was wondering where you all buy your sleeves from, or if anyone had any suggestions for where to look. Yamaha dealership here in town wanted to charge an arm and a leg for parts, so that is out of the question. If I cannot get this fixed for reasonably cheap, I am going to part it out. How much can you usually get for the engine parts, and would anyone here be interested in the engine/frame/everything else.

I will take some pictures for you all, and post on here later.

Not sure what made it blow up. Bought it from a friend here in town for $150. It wouldn't start when I got it. We pulled the carbs, cleaned them real good, jetted it for correct altitude, and it started ran fine after a new set of plugs. It is a pretty old one, so I figure it might have just been worn out to start with.

One of my cylinder walls has a crack about a quarter inch long at the bottom of it. I would rather just re-sleeve it back to Yamaha-spec. I have a set of .std pistons for it already, so if I can get sleeves, I can just use those.

What are your thoughts on Boost Bottles? Worth the couple bucks?

You could take it to a good shop that knows their shit and they can weld the cracks bore the cylinders out then replate it. My friend messed up the cylinders on his XCSP 800 and thats what he ended up doing. It ended up being around 200 for one cylinder but they accidentally did both so he got one done for free. Either that or look on ebay for some used cylinders or get it replated if you can.

YOu should look into all posibilities and just do what ever is cheaper.

My 87 is bored .100 over, wiseco has the stuff for it. If you want new cylenders, call the guy on my signature and he can hook you up with a REALY good price. Tell him JD from MI sent you. But yea, the .100 over is great, so if u can do that it would be the cheapes way for ya.

A boost bottle will give you 7.4 additional Hp. Mostly bottom-end. I put two on my banshee because I needed 14.8 Hp to help me pull stumps out of my yard.

yeah i also run 2 of em. makes pulling my aluminum bass boat out of the water a breeze. but seriously the same thing happened to me and instead of resleeving i was able to find a guy willing to sell me a coolhead vforce reeds and some trinity stage IV cylinders for $375. the deals are out there just gotta look for them.
