How to run vin?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I recently picked up a bare banshee frame from my neighbor for $20. She said it had been sitting for years and it was probably her sons but she wanted to get rid of it. I figured for $20 it was worth the risk. I inspected it and its in perfect condition. I cant find a single dent or crack. My question is before I invest any more time or money I want to make sure it is not stolen. How do I find this out? And if it does come back stolen how would I make things right to make it all legal? On my title it has my frame vin and my engine serial number so how much trouble would that be to get it changed if everything worked out? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

well in most states a local police officer will run that for you

say you got it at a rummage sale or some good excuse like that

i think here in il its 65 bucks for a lost title

not for sure if you have to get the last registered owner to sign any paperwork or not

in some states a bill of sale works for it and you can get a fresh title but those states are few and far between if any evan still do it that way

i wouldn t bolt anything up right yet,if you know a police officer get him to run the vin. or if your feeling bold take it to the police station, get them to run the vin. think about it 1 st.depending on the cop, you may open up a can of worms.try to get a cop you know,or that somebody knows to run it.

Here you have to have a VIN inspection if you buy a frame. It can be done by a sherrif (good luck finding one) or a DMV "officer" basically the dumb woman you are talking to about getting it done.

Then, if you don't have a VIN, or its missing/not legible etc...you have to rivit a state issued VIN onto the frame, then get a VIN inspection.

Right then, if the VIN doesn't check out, be sure you have a bill of sale stating the persons name, address, phone number blood type and shoe size. The state patrol WILL be contacted within 1 second of them verifying that the frame is stolen. If you can point the finger DO IT! Let it be someone elses problem, and you're only out $20.00

When I went to get my final registration, I mentioned that I bought the frame on line. The woman said..Oh you bought it on line?? I thought I was fucked...here we go again with the fuckin flaming hoops I have to leap through....When she says...You're registration will be $6.00

I said......$6.00  (it was almost $50 10 seconds ago)

Yes.

WOOHOO

something went right that day.

This spring my kid and I were riding along the RR tracks and found a Polaris down in the ditch. We got off our quads and looked around and called out and no-one answered. Since it was pretty well hidden and getting dark we went on the rest of our ride for about an hour or so. On the way back it was still there. Key wasn't in it but nothing was wrecked like in a fresh crash or anything. So we went home and dropped off the kids quad and then came back again {dark by now} and then towed it home. I set it next to the garage for the night since I was leaving for vacation the next day for 10 days. When I got back. I call the police station with the vin. Here's the mistake I made... I told them where I live. They said there was no recorded ownership but since it wasn't "mine" they couldn't even let me hold it for the waiting period. I said to the cop that I would like to buy it if it comes up on auction but he said he didn't know anything about it. A couple weeks later I got a call from the towing yard who said he noticed on the report that I had several of my own ATV's and he was looking for a small one for his kid. We got to talking and I said I'd like to get the one that was impounded. He said there was a $135 towing fee and $35 a day for a min of 30 days to get it. OK well this thing was beat I figured a couple hundred. To make a longer story shorter, I talked to the guy every couple weeks for months about getting the quad and it remained wrapped up in red tape.

If I had it to do over again, I would call from a public place and say that I was thinking of buying an older ATV and that I wanted to make sure the deal was legit. They would have taken 10 minutes at most to run the numbers and it would have been mine. Because the towing company that came to get it from MY HOUSE took it to impound, THEY have a lein on it and any money that comes in for it will go to them.

THAT SUCKS
