Running rich on one side...help

Recommended Posts

I just got my banshee back together about a month ago and til the other day its been running fine and still is except it seems one side is runnign really rich....the plug was fouled the other day on a ride and i had to continue riding it untill we got back and it was smoking quite a bit, so i figured change the plugs and see what happens...so i did and i ran it hard for a liltle while thinking the smoke was just from unburnt oil but it continued and i checked the plug on the right side and its pretty bad, really rich. The left side is fine..it looks like its running perfect.......first time banshee owner, WHAT DO I DO?? banghead

welcome to banshees. i always hear of the left side being leaner than the right side, or the right side being richer than the left side. what a PITA, that's partly why I like my single carb.

Most likely, it has to do with the choke circuit. Is the crossover tube, no wait, emulsion tube in there tight, say on the left side?

yeah everything looks ok and is good and tight...for the life of me i cant figure it out....i got spark, i even tired to mess with the fuel air mixture but no luck.....and the plug doesnt look all that bad...it looks almost exactly like the other...but no smoke on that side, my only other guess coudl be maybe the reeds?

yes, reeds can also be a possibility. when did you check the plug for this issue, at idle, or wide-open-throttle, or maybe after a short ride. what i'd suggest is to first, run a WOT test, and what I mean is get out on a straight stretch and run it up to 5th or 6th gear at wide-open-throttle. When you get up to 5th or 6th and your holding totally pegged, pull clutch and kill the motor with the throttle still held until you stop. then get off and check the plugs. See how they look that way. Then when you get back, let it idle for 3 or 4 minutes and check them again, this will give you an idea as to how it's normally running ( w/ the wot run) and then how the idle circuit is running.

the reason i say this, is because it could be a choke circuit issue at idle, but when you get out and go riding, it's no longer an issue. And, if that's the case, it's not unheard of to have a larger pilot on the left than on the right, and I don't mean a drastic difference, i mean by no more than say one size.

check it out, you may have already done this, i'm just trying to isolate the issue.

Later.

you know how the guy said it was a crossover tube, it wasent, the guy who posted said it was the needle jet i belive, everyone was wrong on that one , but def check the reeds, make sure there not cracked, or flaking or theres space inbetween the cage and the reed
