DevilDriver
about 2 weeks ago i traded a guy a 83 honda atc 250r, a rifle, and $400 cash. i rode it around a few times and everything seamed fine. i took it out last weekend and it was running fine for a while. started only firing on one cylinder and ended up dying totally by the end of the day. took it home put plugs in it and it wouldnt start. i saw some wiring that didnt look right with the TORS that was removed so i disconnected it at the black box. it started up but wouldnt idle good. i ripped it up and down the street a few times and as i was pulling into the driveway i pulled in the clutch to coast over a bump when i let it out the motor bogged out and i heard a pop then it died and hasnt started since. it was recommended to take apart the crabs and clean them good, which i did. still nothing.i think im getting gas as the plugs are wet when i pull them. im getting blue spark. i sprayed a little gas in the cylinders and it ll start for a sec but then die out. i did a compression check and on one cylinder it was 65 the other 75 so im thinkin top end. so i figure while its down i ll get the paperwokr started and went to the DMV to get the correct forms. i go to fill them out and i look for the VIN number and there isnt one on the frame and the one on the motor was partially gone and has some marks on it liek someone took a punch to it. so now ive got a quad that probrobly needs a top end and i cant register because it may be hot. so i called the guy and bitched him out and he was like " well it was as is and it ran when you picked it up, and i told you i didnt have the papers for it." which he did say but said i could go to DMV and reapply for them. i called him today about trading back and he said hed trade the 3 wheeler and the gun back but not the cash because now he ll have to fix it. if it was the old days id just go whoop some but and take the stuff back or show up with cops. i could get another frame with a title but thats more money. what would you guys do? thanks in advance. Christian
stupid question, Did you get a bill of sale with some type of VIN number for ID to the sold/traded banshee? If the anweser is NO I`d consider away the 400 bucks and chalk it up to "I WONT DO THAT AGAIN!".(myself I like to have paper work on anything that floats or has tires) are you sure it dont have any VIN number on the frame? Is it powder coated/painted real thick and has the number covered over? If you can find a number and find a helpfull person at the dmv,and thats kinda like winning the lotto. You could possibly get papers on the bike. DMV,local police to check the numbers back to DMV. But with out a way of proving that the guy you got it from really traded you just in case it is stolen, you could lose out pretty hard. So atleast if it is stolen and you have a bill of sale his name and state ID# etc you may get back your stuff and let him be out. and forget whats wrong with it right now and find out if you can even legaly own it.Cause I cant think of anyreason to "punch" out the numbers even if its not the ORG. case to the frame. Hockey390
I in no way want to steal your topic... But I'm kinda in the same boat, so instead of having a new topic of the same nature, I will just post my problem here, if you want me to delete it I will.. .just let me know. I purchased an 87 back a few years ago.. Got a bill of sale, the VIN on the frame is basically ground down so you cant read it.. The case #'s are clearly readable. The guy I bought it from said that in 87 they didnt come with a title, so I didnt think much of it, but in today's world.. I want insurance, and I want a title. SO, as gready as this is, if my bike was stolen way back whenever, and then sold to me, I really dont want the DMV or whatever to take it away, cause I've invested a boatload, so is there anyway that I can check and see if it is Hot without going through hell? Also can I get a title made up at the secritary of state? (sp?) Again sorry if I stole the topic... i just didnt want to post a new topic with practically the SAME question.. DirtRider
try sending an email to the dmv and have them email you back. prolly wont do that but worth a shot. find someone with a bent frame that there gonna trash and ask them for the vin number then it dont matter if its on the frame you have it on your peice of paper. tell them your thinkig about buying a bike and was wondering if it was stolen, if they come at saying it is give them all the details. were there any eye witnesses at the trade? if there was people there then your all set. hes not gonna take you to court over it. if he does you have people there to varify it. always get a bill of sale though. MULLET~BOY
i would also get some new cases for it too couse they can use the number on the cases to find out info also but if you got a new frame and cases your good to go kinda scary how easy it is to steal a atv and never get cought

PyRo_ZaCh
they have like acid and stuff to bring the numbers out (unless their compleatly drilled out or somthing then i guess you cant) but if it is stolen i guess that would just make things worse
DevilDriver
thanks for the advice guys. ive already got money besides what i got it for tied up into it, so im still trying to decide what to do. i may just get another frame. thanks for posting that link DirtRider. after alot of cleaning and messing around i think i can see the numbers. how amny numbers should there be? i think i see 2 digits, a letter, then 6 more digits. does that sound right?? DirtRider
maybe you should take your time and go over this bike and learn about it. then sell it the same way the guy you bought it from sold it. that way you will get the money and you can buy another one. unless this was a steal and you can afford a new frame
DevilDriver
i did get it for a killer deal. i only shelled out about $1700 for it. the 3 wheeler i got for $500 and told him $1000 the gun was $800 and $400 cash. spent about another $150 on small stuff. so yeah i did get it cheap. a full frame up rebuild wa sin the plans but not till the fall/winter. now i just wanna get it runnin and ride the rest of the summer. i may just leave it as is till fall and find another frame. im usually on private property anyways so im not worried about cops. they would be the trespassers. thanks for the help. itsaripper
I have a 87 and it came with a title. But some states don't give titles. Could you lightly sand the number area and use some paint remover? Or have they been ground off? I would call the DMV and be as anounamos as possable. Say "I am looking at a frame, to buy. Give any numbers you have. Is it hot? If no numbers then say, I am building a quad and the frame I have has no numbers. Someone lightened it for drag racing, or I had a friend do some clean up on the frame. I am getting it power coated and the numbers aren't there anymore. You may need to grind down some of the weld to look like it was being prepared for a power coat. Then ask can I get a title for Assembled in 2004"? But at that point they are going to want to see the frame to put some ID on it. But for $400 I would take my banshee down to the frame. Maybe pull the plastics, tank, swing arm(one bolt and whole rear comes off), motor, and front tires. After that it should look like you just bought a frame. Well those are just some ideas. Keep us posted on how you do.
