sredish Posted June 22, 2004 Report Share Posted June 22, 2004 Fairly new Dell. Haven't called them, but probably will tonight. We had a power outage and lots of lightning. It's powered through a surge protector. The power button won't work. You have to unplug then when you plug it back in, it comes to life. However, the initial Dell screen comes on for a very short second and then the screen goes blank like the computer is turned off, but the computer light is on and the power button is nonfunctional. Whatever you do, DON'T replace the power supply with a standard ATX, it may not work and worst case will fry the motherboard. nater006 Posted June 22, 2004 Report Share Posted June 22, 2004 Sounds like the supply is toast. Usually that'll catch the brunt of any shock. Sounds like its giving just enough juice to "spool up" all the internals and then crapping out. An ATX should work but yeah.. gotta be careful. If its a P4 system, which I'm sure it is, you'll need something designed for that. p3 and older power supplies won't work. It could be the system board, so they might ship you a tech with both. Power button kicks the supply on via the motherboard, so if thats fried it can exhibit the same symptoms. Pretty sure at least the power supply is toasted though, if it gets going and then poofs off.
