Still Too Rich?

I'm running the Trinity CV manifold with a 35mm PWK. I've jetted up all the way from 175 to 215. Keihin only makes mains up to 230 so I'm kinda freaked out to be lean on my nearly stock setup. I did a WOT plug check on a new plug and snapped these photos:

Here it is next to a new plug to use as a reference.

Thanks for the help and patience guys!

looks like you need some more run time on the plugs cause they didn't color too much. get the bike nice and warmed up with them in and fart around for a few and then run your check, you'll get a lot more color on the ring and all to read from.

I rode it pretty hard for about 10 minutes so it was good and warmed up. Then I slapped the new plug in and did a WOT check. Isn't that how you're supposed to do it? Won't the plug get darkened from other areas of the throttle range if you ride around with it?

Mine burn like that too with the oil I run. Super clean maxima tundra R. You need to look into the plug at the porcelain at the bottom. There should be a ring in there. If it's really black.. which I bet the one on the right is, it's rich. You're ideal jetting is 2mm brown ring at the bottom. By looking at the strap, the plug on the right is rich. Did it sputter on top end with the highest jetting you ran?

By looking at the strap the plug on the right looks a little rich , but I can't see the bottom of the porcelain ,

My vote is with fixitrod.

When I got mine running good the strap was dark brown .

If in doubt keep going up until it sputters on the top .

That is the correct way, the picture that Fixitrod showed shows you exactly where to check. I do my WOT test the same way as you and I always get an indication at the bottom of the insulator, even after only one run.

Maybe I didn't run it long enough. I ran it wide open for a few seconds down a strip. Maybe if I put the plug in and run it a few times back and forth down that strip I'd get a better reading.

I just took a flashlight after the plug and the white porcelain is white down to the base. There is very little to no coloring.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just something I wanted to add to this since it's been bumped back up. I always use nasty ass used plugs for readings. They've been broken in and been colored and to me, it seems they color the best and the easiest. Also, I always try to put 20 or 30 minutes on a set of plugs, especially new, before I try to take a plug reading to make sure they're nice and warmed up, except if I'm worried it's really lean, then I'll just do what i gots to do.
