KRMit
When going slow through the woods or running a tight bowl my temps go sky high. What is the best option for cooling and what provides the most "bang for the buck"? Bigger radiator Noss head with increased compression Inline cooler and cooland additive
sredish
Inline cooler is good for 5 degrees and maybe up to 10 Noss head is good for some as long as you don't raise the compression, raising the compression raises temps and will equalize whatever cooling your getting. Coolant additive is an effective way to drop 40 or 50 degrees, that's with Engine Ice. I'd use Engine Ice only, as it cools much more efficiently than watter wetter. Radiator, expensive, like 3 to 4 bones, however, it is by far the best way to get the temps down and in a hurry. If your jetting is good and you really need to get the temps down, the inline cooler won't really help too much, Engine Ice can help some, but if it is a necessity, don't screw around, get a large radiator and fill it up with Engine Ice and you'll be as cool as the Fonz. KRMit
Thanks for summing it up there for me Sredish. That rules out an aftermarket head. I'm hitting temps around 210 (coolant) when doing donuts or slow woods riding. I hear you're safe under 200. It sounds like Engine Ice is the best option. Does Engine Ice freeze? I mean, is it safe to leave in during winter? Edited May 30, 2004 by KRMit
dlnoss
I have seen pretty consistant temperature drops with the head; anywhere from 15 to 45 degrees even with the increased compression. Engine Ice is pretty inexpensive though unless you're wanting to get a head anyway.

gchris858
have you checked your jetting. sounds that your running on the lean side. i would try running the bike and getting it up to temp. and pull both plugs. the plugs should look the same for both sides. light brown at the electrode.once i get my plugs there i will raise the neddle all the way to 5 or go one or two more sizes in the main. a little wet on the plugs vs. none is always a safe zone. also i don't know what kind of rideing you do but, all i do is drag race so i run 80% water and 20% coolant. also might want to consider on getting a mega flow impeller and get ride of the plastic stock one. yes a after market head will help with flow and cool more .the cooler more hp. i would try the small easy things first before i would go buy a larger cap. radiator. good luck
dlnoss
so that's where you'd see the 15 to 45 depending on compression? Higher compression and advanced timing do increase the engine temp. The cooling of the Noss head is more 'even' than many other aftermarket heads so the cylinders as well as the combustion chamber are cooled better. Some heads flow coolant quickly which doesn't do as much good as flowing coolant thoroughly. Heat must be transferred to the coolant so it can be removed by the radiator if it and the water pump are working properly. It won't cure other problems like improper jetting, clogged or blocked radiator, malfunctioning water pump, or other things like that. wesw
if you want a cooler bike get the rad toomey rad is thick and works like a dream. the head to me is more for performance sure it forces water down the jackets better but the rad is the shizzle
lincster
Radiator is the biggest bang. You double your cooling fluid amount. But they are expensive. I thought it was worth it.
