Engine Noise (piston Slap?)

Recommended Posts

Can some assist me? I have a 1999 banshee, stock with tors removed. The engine seems to run fine, with plenty of power but th engine vibrates like crazy and something sounds like it is rattling in the cylinders. But like I said it runs strong. Any ideas what might cause this? The bike has plenty of use but runs strong other than the noise and vibration. Thanks for the help, this is my first post

My water pump sounds like a plastic screwdriver bouncing around in the engine. That may be the noise you're hearing. As far as vibration...I'd have to see or hear it but I bet it's normal. Has it always been this way or is the Shee new to you?

the bike is new to me. I bought it about a week a ago for my wife. It is in good condition but I fully expected to have some repairs for the price that i paid ($1400). The noise actually is not constant, just when i rev the rpms up, for a second or two, just sound slike a rattle. My bike is a 2003 with mods and it seems much tighter and runs very smooth (i guess because it is so much newer)? thanks for any help/ideas

I just bought an 02 blaster for the wife and the motor is noisy It sounds like piston slap to me so Im gunna have it rebuilt after the big poker run we have coming up this weekend. anyway back to your problem If you can get your hands on a stethascope you could put it on the motor and pinpoint the noise. thats what I did cause I didnt know where the sound was comming from and I def hear it in the topend.

dont screw around, rebuild it! i thought i had piston slap, but i put it off as engune noise and then three days later my left piston let loose in 6th WOT. cratered the whole topend on that side. but i got trinity cylinders new reeds, new pistons and a new head out of the deal. kinda cool actually

get a compression gauge.....every 2 stroke owner should have one. It'll tell you whats goin on inside of your engine for the most part.

The easiest way to hear piston slap and where you'll hear it most is when your in the rpm band and not on the throttle but not off the throttle either, kind of where your pistons are just floating.....you'll hear a chattering sound. Mine started to do it noticeably and a few months later I had a ring go on it. I was running to high of a compression for a stock setup though (172 lbs) and it tore the top end apart.

MIne has done it since day one..... even after I blew it up and rebuilt it. 'Shee runs like a raped ape so I'm honestly not worried about it. If it does go though that just gives me an excuse for a stroker :D .

BTW: My noise sounds like the one your describing but it sounds like it's coming from a loose bolt rattling (like the sound when your leave a socket or wrench laying on the bike and start it up).

I have the exact same intermittent vibration. The bike rips and I have 150 psi both sides. smooth idle. on engine wind down I get the vibration. If anyone has news in this it would be appreciated. Thanks
