Gearing

Recommended Posts

i just got some 18 inch shredders and i wanted to know what gear i should go with up front i have stock rear. i am ported, piped, 20cc domes, 28mm carbs thinking mabey 16 tooth but dont really now?

What are you running now and how do you like the performance? If you're running a 14, you can probably bump up to a 15. It all depends on where you want the power. Going higher you'll lose a little bottom-end power (will lose over full RPM range, but most noticeable at low RPM), but will allow you to hold a gear longer and reach a higher top speed. You can order one from Rocky Mountain for about $10.

If you ran 20" tires before with stock 14/41 gearing and want to keep it the same gearing, a 16/42 will be about as close as you can get with 18" tires. A 16/41 will a tad higher, but you might like that setup, and it still is not as high as my 15/41 with 20" tires.

Good luck. For more help, download BenBB's Excel gearing sheet. This will let you type in a specific tire and sprocket set for comparing different gear ratios. Changing tire sizes doesn't affect the final drive ratio, you'll have to look at the top speed in 6th and try to match it when changing tire sizes

i am running 22 inch tires and and like it. all the sprockets are stock 14/41 i think that is what it is? so what would that be close 16/41

nah, more like 16/38 would be very close. 16/41 would be lower geared a little.
