Filter Oil

Recommended Posts

I've been using PJ1 filter oil. Would it be just as good to use say 10w30 motor oil? The tacky PJ1 gets everything sticky and is a pain in the ass to get off.

100% agreed. I think the PJ1 is a great foam filter oil, but it is such a freaking PITA becuase it gets everywhere, sticks to everything and just sucks. I used to always use 10w30 or even 50w, don't know how I got conned into that stuff. My local race shop swears by the PJ1, don't know if I just put way the f*^k too much on or what.

Later.

I doubt you used too much. According to the instructions on the can you're supposed to rub it in with your fingers. That's just plain gross. The only effective things I've found to clean that crap off are PJ1 filter cleaner (imagine that) and gas. Gas eats up the filter and that cleaner costs too damn much.

So you're currently using 10w30?

I was just checking a couple things on Duncan Racing's site. I noticed they had a "how-to" for cleaning the air filter. They recommended the use of Maxima foam filter spray. I may get some and try it, as I've got two filters to clean and I won't be riding any time real soon.

As far as yucky for your fingers, spray the filter pretty good, then put it in a ziplock bag and spread it around the filter like that, and when your done spreading, just keep it in there till your ready to use it, nice and clean.

PJ1 is the best stuff out there. Bellray makes some good filter oil..but PJ1 is better. You use the sprat can right? That can makes oiling a hell of a lot easier with less waste. I use rubber gloves when I oil my filter. The problem with just using regular oil is that it will settle and drip off the filter...If you don't service it regularly you will suck dirt. PJ1 has much better adherance to the filter and it's sticky nature traps way more dirt then regular oil could ever hope too. Plus PJ1 has some water resistance and allows the water to just bead up and roll off...but don't saturate the filter with water. Oiling a filter will always be a pain in the ass..your just going to have to get used to it. I clean and oil my filter before every ride..so If i ride sat and sun..I clean my filter on sat and on sunday. Never ride on a dirty filter.

I've kinda had my filter sitting out in the garage drying while I was watching this topic. I came home yesterday to find foam covering the garage. Looks like my dog has a taste for the stuff. I believe he's tearing more up on the thing than I am. A local shop is supposed to have one in by the weekend... but $40 hurts. Today I came home to find a mangled oil seal ($5) and my jet collection in the yard. I think I recovered all the jets but damn! It's my fault for leaving the stuff where he can get it but that sure didn't save him from an ass wuppin.

i rarely use any oil at all, but when i have it was pj1. haven't used it yet without the shee bogging and running like shit afterwards. i know, sounds like too much oil. but it sure didn't take much to do it the last time, so i said the hell with it. my filters are kept clean, and my intake boots are almost always dirt free. i usually don't get into a lot of dust, and never any sand. just mud and water, which the pro flow filters seem to do just fine with. I had a dream last night I was working on my dad's fourwheeler (he doesn't even own one  ) and when I pulled the air filter off, the intake was completely filled with dirt and grass and stuff. I'm not exactly sure where that came from. -_-
