Okay, feel free to flame away at me for saying this but...

Today... been listening to my coworkers bitch about how hard it has made their lives to spend an extra $5-15 on a fill-up and how "it's just not fair" when, in my opinion, they should shut the hell up and be grateful they aren't stranded in New Orleans, minus their homes, posessions, or families.

I don't like the prices either and it hurts me just as bad but holy hell it could be much worse for any of us...

Just my opinion.

Man, it is getting crazy. I understand that I'd rather

not be on the other end down in N.O. but heck I haven't

had to buy gas in 5 months. I've been deployed and all

i get when i get home is the fact that i dont get paid enough

to drive to work anymore. I just aint got the cash. I mean

I talked to my girl and its costing 70 bucks a week to drive my

truck. Thats crazy. We dont even know if we'll be able to take

a vacation when i get back. 3 bucks a gallon, and there is already

talk of 4 bucks. banghead

Eh, don't mind me... just... kinda pissed off at the whole situation. Yeah, I think it sucks for folks who can't afford it. I know a lot of people that are very tightly budgetted and this will hurt them - mostly referring to the folks who are just complaining about a few dollars more and not really seeing the broad picture, and where they *could* be right now..

i understand where you are comin from about the bigger picture but were those people in NO blindsided by this storm or did they know about it? i mean fuck, if they knew about it why the fuck wouldnt they leave? if they knew, and didnt leave and got killed, i really have no symapthy for them. i can assure you if i was there and knew about it, id be gettin the fuck out of dodge.

I know what your saying about those that didn't leave NO before the storm hit, but there are those that had no way to get out. I'm guessing about 5% of the population, the rest were idiots. The last time a hurricane was gonna hit, they made the comments about how NO was vulnerable, they knew this storm was larger, they should have ran.

I'm just trying to think outside of the "white boy on high ground in the suburbs" box and wondered what I would do if I was poor with no insurance and lived in a crime ridden area.

It might be tempting to stay since there is a chance the hurricane would bypass my area. If I evacuated before it got really bad, I might reason with myself that every drug addict and thief would be in my house stealing everything before I even got to the end of the block. If I evacuate my sick aunt, my 6 kids and my old lady who is bustin' her butt working at the dollar store, 200 miles away to "safe" ground and the storm doesn't hit, how am I going to afford to get back or even how am I going to scrape up the money to leave town. If I'm 200 miles away and the storm doesn't hit, am I going to be able to miss work at my employer? Where am I going to stay when I'm away? All my family and friends live in N-O? If the storm hits, I may be able to get some help from the feds. If it doesn't hit I may lose my job and all of my belongings because I tried to be safe.

It sucks to be poor, uneducated, and below sea level. I'm glad I only have to drive 15 minutes to the office and not 1+ hours sitting in traffic throwing hands full of dollar bills out in the street.

N-O should NEVER have been allowed to be developed the way it was. Federal engineers have known for decades that the situation was ripe for disaster. Now the disaster has come. Politicians around here have allowed homes to built near the river. About 10 years ago the river flooded and ruined millions of dollars in homes. The politicians said "It's a once in 100 years flood" and allowed homes to be rebuilt and new homes to be added. A couple years ago it flooded just the same and even more millions were wasted. In fact the flood was even worse. They even allowed a church to build a multimillion dollar addition on the flood plane. Now they want to tear everything down {not the church because the politicians apparently go there :shrugani: } and put the businesses out. These businesses were strugling as it is. But they went thru all the work of restoring their properties and now they want to shove them out and tear it down. So much of this could have been avoided if people would have been smarter.

#1 offer these poor folks a flat fee for their houses {by the looks of alot of 'em they should have gone cheap}

#2 block ALL future building in thses dangerous areas. Not even mansions for the politicians.

#3 turn the area into usable public space. Of course an ATV park and fishing ponds and walking trails and nature areas would be awesome {mostly ATV trails :)}

#4 develop safer areas for residences which will have a much higher value because the city would mostly be a park and require new structures to be hurricane resistant so people can be safer.

But now that there is no tax base, no income, and no residences, and no residents, the only money that will be spent there will be from insurers {most of that money is sucked up by the contractors} and the government {most of that money is sucked up by the politicians and their preferred contractors}.

As far as I can tell, New Orleans is the modern equivalent of Atlantis.

Holy, true how true. Thats what most people dont realize. The only people left in NO are the one that had very limited means to leave or none at all . Sure there their were die hards that said hell I can ride this out. But look at most of the pictures and tell me these people have fat bank accounts and two cars sitting in the garage. I dought it very much. It would really suck to be poor and have to stay in a place where you know you might die in a storm.

most of the people that stay were beyond poor. they had nothing but basically a home. its no excuse i would do all i could to get my ass out of there. even if i had nothing but my clothes on my body and shit.

but if you have no money, no car, no family to help you out what do you expect.

its still no excuse but :shrugani:

And for all the people that got out of there but still lost their houses, possessions, etc? An extra $5-15 on a fill-up (maybe more, sorry - just guestimating) doesn't even begin to touch somebody losing everything they own - whether they "got the fuck out of dodge" or not - or even the inconvenience involved with losing your home whether it's insured or not. Homes lost, jobs lost.. so on and so forth.

Nutshell: yeah, I too have a lacking of sympathy for the people who stuck around but had the option to get out. But - regardless of what decisions somebody made prior to the storm, what they lost is a hell of a lot more than some extra cash at the pump for us.

all of this is insane...i cant even drive my dodge anymore b/c i cant afford the gas..i got to drive dads nissan whiles he gone on a truck...it is currently $2.81 here...its just crazy..working part time and going to college...it aint working...

My buddie ordered a set of wheels from a place down near new orleans and the wheels got lost in the hurricane the shop is standing it water...

40 TXU electric trucks left out from NE Texas to go down there and work...instead of making $20 an hour they are now getting paid $42 an hour to go down there and work..they doubled there pay..2 ppl per truck..there are over 150 electric trucks down near new orleans working...if the us can afford to double there pay just to drive down there to work then they should be able to afford to lower the gas prices some...but alot of ppl are saying that gas is supposed to go down a tad bit after labor day b/c every one will be traveling this weekend..whether i believe that or nots a diff story...
