How To Pull The Flywheel

Recommended Posts

I just used a regular 17mm deep socket(dont have an impact socket that size), on my impact gun. Came right off. Be careful though, if your gonna use a regular socket on the impact....they've been known to shatter...

If you dont have an impact, try sticking a screwdriver through one of the holes on the flywheel(being careful not to damage the stator) and use it as a lever as you try to get the nut off.

An impact is the EASIEST way to remove that nut. Like mentioned, travel down to the local service station, or maybe even a local tire shop. Bring the proper 1/2" drive socket with you. Ask them nicely to pull it for you..... That is provided you can get it on a trailer and out there.,....... If not, maybe a strap wrench? But I have broken a few of those trying things like that. I usually get frustrated, and take whatever it is out to the shop and just use an impact. You can get an electric impact pretty cheap......

What I did, which might not be a good idea, but it worked, was put a wrench on there that was the right side, then took a pair of channel locks and put them on the end of a wrench so you have a longer torque arm. Then I took a pair of channel locks and grabbed onto that circular peice that is on the front of the flywheel, it just sticks out about 1/3 of an inch maybe less.. then another set of channel locks onto that set to extend the torque arm.. have someone hold one and you hold the other and pull hard...you will think it wont budge but if its like mine it didnt move at all then BAM right off..

And i turn to the expert.... boonman, is that safe?

Worked for me, but I used an air impact wrench to put it back on, that was alot easier!

Taking it off is one thing, but i'm kinda leary on puting it back on w/ an impact. I don't know for sure, but doesn't that nut have a torque spec??? I just wouldn't want to over tighten some thing that spins and have it "bind up".....like i said, i dont know for sure if it's torqued....but thats just me..

I've never used an i mpact wrench to remove the fl ywheel nut..and I use red locktite on my shiznit...Put the bike in 6th gear, lock the rear brake and front brake then try to take the nut off. It should budge like that. I use zip ties to lock the front and a cinderblock to lock the rear. It takes some muscle so you got to be a man about it.

390, if you're talking about holding the other side of the crank, (the clutch side), than that is a no-no.... remember, that crank is only pressed together. Nedless stress should not be put on it.... Either way, I still stand behind the impact gun... If you have never used one, you don't know what you'r missin...... ANd the flywhel is on a taper lock. It only needs to be tightened to it's torque spec.... But I use an impact for that...... My impact gun on it's lowest setting is about 80 lb./ft. So, I just use that. Works like a charm....

JK, My shee sat up for about 10yrs, so trust me when I say that the nut frozen tight.

I tried everything that I could think of, and what finally worked for me was a wood chisel. It works somewhat like an impact because of the sudden blow, just put the chisel on one of the tips and hammer away with caution. It didn't work at first because it was just too frozen. I had to apply LIQUID WRENCH to it and let it sit for about 7hrs. Even then using a socket still wouldn't break it loose. BUT, I then grabbed my hammer and chisel and on the second blow shee came loose.

Hope this helps

I just take a ratchet strap tie-down, attach the hooks to the frame above the swingarm bolt,...wrap the tie-down around the flywheel & ratchet it tight so the flywheel won't move. Then I take a wrench & a cheater, take the nut off...then bust out the flywheel puller & whalah. B)
