Shit like that article is what caused the atv band and crackdown and degradation of the sport more then 10 years ago..It's why the 250r, lt250 & lt500, Tecate 4..That's why they all went bye bye...Now that it's finaly starting back up again..shit's happening all over. Hope it doen't get any worse. That whole article was nothing but a bunch of propaganda..From what I read, it seems the parents don't want to take responsibility for letting their 8 year olds ride a 500cc workhorse around the farm when he should have been riding his LEM caymen 50. That's their own fault.

You know, I get off the pc and i'm fine, then i get back on, check here and read the new posts and get pissed off all over again. I feel you Motul, in regards to the old school quads. The lt250r is my all time fave, not because the speed, or handling, or this and that, but because it was my first real quad and i had a lot of good times with one.

I could rant and rant, but I'll go and do something more constructive for the time being. Thanks again for the feedback, good to hear the feedback and glad you all get as wound up as i do over this shit.

I think this is an excellent post and thank you sredish for taking the time scanning, uploading, etc... :)

I know someone said this before in this post but I too think it's pretty ironic how in the article it never states whether any of these kids were wearing helmets or any other safety gear while they were riding.

Only thing I can agree with in the article is the fact that kids under 16 have no business on an ATV without adult supervision; especially since the parent IS RESPONSIBLE for their children until they're 18. To tell you the truth, I think NO ONE, no matter how old you are should go riding without someone else; just in case there is an accident. My friends and I have made it a rule that no one goes alone, and that when we do ride, each rider keeps up with the rider behind them, that way no one gets left behind whether they're stuck, wrecked, hurt, or just needing a breather.

The ATV does only what the rider controls it to do.....

ok now that i'm 16 i guess i could say this since it wouldent affect me, that size chart thing not sure what it was, something like 10 or under 70cc or less 12 or under 90cc or less under 16 250cc or less, not sure if thats right, but there should be a fine for riding an "over sized" atv for your age group, this way when some neighbor sees this happeing the parents get hit with a $500 fine and the 8yr old just waits till he can handel some 700cc 600lb beast. instead of them attacking all atv manufactures and riders, if you leave your 8yr old by a pool and he drowns is it the pools fault? if you give them a loaded gun is it the guns fault? if you give them matches is it the match companys fault? hell if you give them beer and the keys to you car i guess your gettin a nice law suit from budwiser and chevy then. I mean you gota be 16 to drive, 21 to drink, 18 to own a gun, all thats enforced, and there should be a helmet law too, I like the one we have here for motorcycles you have to be over 18 (I think) and have a few (3 i think) years of experience, then you have the choice to wear one, and by then you probly learned its a good idea.

so basicaly when you see a lil kid playin around on a quad, if theres no supervision, and they dont have a helmet go and tell the parents about it and show them that article so these things can just be prevented. but if theres a kid putting around a yard wearing a helmet with his mom and or dad there watching, then i guess their responsible enough to let them have a lil fun on it.

sorry if the post was a lil long

That's kinda what they were saying in some ways in regards to the fact is unregulated. Going about it correctly wouldn't be too bad if it was done correctly, although I hate to see the government get involved with quads at all. It seems when something get regulated, it's never the right way and it funnels to a smaller and smaller hole that ends up biting the people that love the sport or whatever it may be.

I don't have a problem letting a 12 year old ride dad's utility, if dad is there with him and the kid is wearing a helmet and the dad exercises some responsibility. But clearly that's not the case in the article either. 2 years ago, I probably wouldn't have known what it's like, but I do now. I have a 22 month old and if I lost him to something like what happened in that article, I know it would be my damn fault and I would blame myself. Hell, I'd feel so horribly rotten that I'd probably have to go on medication. How can these parents sleep at night? I just really don't know.

Yeah, that's the last thing we need. Big Brother is already trying to phase out two-stroke power plants. Wait and see where that goes. Don't need em policing us anymore than necessary. Everybody ride responsibly and quit taking those fat bottomed chicks on wheelie rides without a helmet on....

I see some guys buying there 8-10yr. old sons 300&400 EXs and turning them loose on them with no helmet and no type of training at all. When you confront these people after youve had a close call with these kids it gets real nasty, like it's none of you f*&^ing business what my boy does. Then it really gets nasty and you get more people involved until you get it settled or have to run these out of the riding area.

My 8yr. old son rides my 300 fourtrax on my trails on my property with a helmet on. he's very seldom out of my sight. But when he is I don't worry because he's been trained to respect his machine and not to ride over his head.

The sad part is that most adults that are riding don't have any more business on a quad than the child does... :(

Did you guys read the "Wideopen" editorial in the front of Dirtwheels in the new June issue? This is EXACTLY what he's talking about, the media's portrayal of atv use and their one-sided analysis of how dangerous atv's are.

Good read, check it out.
