People Magazine Slandering Atv Use. Must Read

Recommended Posts

My wife buys People magazine from time to time. I picked it up last night and was just thumbing through to find an article on atv use in the US. Basically, the article starts out with parents that lost their 10 year old in an atv accident on their farm when he was riding their "500lb." utility quad with their permission. It says nothing as to whether he was wearing a helmet, or not.

The article states how dangerous and unregulated the sport is and how atv sales have doubled and the injuries have doubled. They mention how "children are injured and maimed by these deceptively risky, and almost totally unregulated vehicles". The more I read, the more flabergasted I was. Oh, and of course, there is a throw regarding how "last year, rocker Ozzy Osbourne was seriously injured when he crashed his atv", but no mention of helmet use.

These kinds of articles are totally ignorant and only for the use of media sales. I doubt there was much research done. If you all don't feel the same way I do, then please tell me. My wife read the article and was equally dumbfounded, and she is not even close to an avid ATV'er, hell I can't even get her to ride my shee.

I am not requesting, I am DEMANDING, that you all use the link below and read the article I've spent hours scanning, loading to pdf, and putting up on my website. When your through, and get over the false statements and accusations, I have also included a link to People magazine's editor for you to email your "respectful" comments. The file is approx. 4.75 MBs, so if your dialup, please be patient, and please take the time.

same thing happened here last year in florida, parents let their 8 year old kid ride their vinson, he trespassed onto an orange grove and was going o fast to notice the wires that they hold those huge sprinklers down with and ran into it. Cut his jugular and bled to death, found him like 18 hours after death. Parents are now pushing for ban of atv riding to anyone under 16 or 18 i think in state of florida. Im like "hello bytches it was your fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I also like the fact that the second kid obviously wasnt wearing a helmet or his face wouldnt look like that. Real nice of them to forget to put in the article how negligent parents were when they let them ride with no helmet.

You've got to be kidding me. The only mention of helmets in that entire article, was the one from the vehicle institution that stated "always wear a helmet". How much more blunt can you get? ANd that kid tht had his face mangled, I doubt very highly that he was wearing a helmet. And the first boy mentioned, I doubt he was wearing a helmet. They stated that he used to check the family trees and property with a trailer hooked up. Most likely he didn't have a helmet... 400 deaths mentioned. and 800,000 units sold. It's funny how they manipulate the facts. They don't mention it, so I will orchestrate it right here for y'all.

edit: Upon researching for the last 10 minutes, I have found this:

http://www.cpsc.gov/LIBRARY/atv2002.pdf

It lays out the number of deaths and pretty much allthat since 1982. Latest figure is 4,541. And when compared to the amount of machines out there, I am willing to bet that an automobile is MUCH more dangerous than an ATV.

Holy shit, just found this. Read it...

No doubt about it there. The organization says that ATV's are safe when ridden responsibly. But, in today's day and age of sue happy mother fuckers, this is what we get. NOONE is responsible for their own actions. Pretty soon, I think I amgonna sue my parents for having me... WHy the f*ck not. I bet I'd win...... :shootself: People today are ridiculous..... Pony up to the plate and admit your idiocy people. And anyone that rides without a helmet, pony right on up there to. Because your stupid just like the rest of them.......

That's absolutely rediculous  It's sad how people won't take resposibility for their own actions anymore and how these other worthless lifesuckers feed off their stupidity.

I sent my "respectful" letter and so should everyone else. Maybe if we flood them with hundreds of "respectful" critisicms they'll get the picture. :whoa:

u cant do that, since u have a quad they'll somehow link the death to ur banshee or 450. this is gettin outtahand when all they have to talk about is the people dying on quads when most of them were drunk withouthelmets, or kids that werent grown up enough to be riding the quads

Boonman, that f'ing awesome. Thanks for the links. I was about to begin searching for that, I didn't have the time earlier.

You know, I don't really expect much more out of a shitty magazine, but what really gets me is the ignorance time and time again. The fact that these parents are so quick to blame anyone/anything but themselves, when they, in fact, put their kids in danger by letting their young son get on a big machine that explicitly states must be over the age of 16 to ride. Are they so f&^king blind that they don't see that. On top of it, you know they let him ride with no helmet and then hooked it up to a trailer and let him yank that around. If I turned my back on my 2 year old and he fell in the lake and drowned, I'd go to jail for negligence, and would deserve it, but in this case, it's the goddamned atv's fault. WTF.

Thanks for all your guys feedback and the fact that I know you feel the same way I do.

Exactly,I have been riding fourwheelers for about 8 years now and i never have broken a bone, or got my jugular cut

I have broken a couple of bones, but I would never blame it on my bike.

I am the one sitting on it, I am the one in control of the throttle and breaks.

If I kill myself on it then its my own damn fault for not paying enough attention.

Some of these parents need to get a fuckin clue, from what I gathered from reading that article none of them seemed to be wearing helmets. If the parents are going to fork out 5k for an ATV you'd think they would cough up another 100 for a helmet.

One thing that would be good to see is a graph of deaths/ages against helmet use.

I like reading Dennis "Ketchup" Cox's Wideopen section in Dirtwheels. That guy tells it how it is. Everything he says always makes sense, and he bashes those stupid magazines or television shows that say all the stupid shit about atv's and their use and how they kill so many people.
