Wallrat
Just thought I'd gloat a bit. On Tuesday my bro and I went for an 18.5 mile paddle in our tandem kayak. Figured that Catalina was only another 10 miles so we returned home, checked out the weather, loaded up the supplies and left Wednesday morning at 5:30. We arrived in Two Harbors at 3:30pm after having paddled 30 miles of open ocean. We ate dinner, camped out and left the next morning at 6:30. Another long ass crossing and we were both feeling pretty sore so even though we had better conditions, it still took us 9 hours to get back to Redondo Beach. So all together, I've paddled 80 miles and 24 hours in the last 3 days.

Ducman
My mom lives on the big Island in Hawaii, Kona side. I've met a few people that have kayaked about 3/4 of the way around the island and said it was a blast. Not for me, but you might want to put that on your to do list one day. Get about 4 to 6 guys and one of those big Kayaks or canoes with the big outrigger. You must be pretty skilled, I've heard of boats getting lost and/or running out of fuel and ending up adrift in the ocean for days on that same trip. Wallrat
Didn't see any sharks thankfully but we did paddle with a buttload of dolphins. We're not sure what we're going to do next. We bought the kayak a month ago with the hopes that "someday" we'd paddle it to Catalina. As it turned out, it only took us 4 paddles before we felt ready to do the crossing. Several ideas are coming up on what to do next. We're thinking about a 2 week trip out to Lake Powell in Utah and just cruise around and explore. That'll be alot easier since we're only planning on 20 miles/day or so. Plus we can jump into the water to stretch out and cool off without fear of what lurks underneath. Another idea is to paddle out to Catalina, spend a day or 2 to circumnavigate the island, then paddle back. Or we might set our sights on one of the islands further out - San Clemente or Santa Barbara Islands, maybe even the Channel Islands if we feel like driving up the coast. Also we're toying with the idea of just heading down the coast and seeing how far we can go - we'll stop when we hit the mexican border. We decided to go ahead and order a sail so that we can at least have some assistance on the downwind legs of our trips. Should extend our distance a bit more. For the moment we're not doing any trips that we have to ship the boat to, but maybe we'll consider a Hawaii trip after we've exhausted everything local.
