got1banshee
I am looking into buying a new truck. What kind should I get? A Ford Power Stroke or a Cummins? Has anyone here pulled much weight and how about reliability? Thanks
dirttrack25
I say whichever u like the looks of most the motors are pretty well the same. im pretty sure cummins makes the power stroke motor for the fords. I know both motors have plenty of power to pull just about anything.
.
Go with the Ford, they are a beast of a truck, and one of the few real trucks still out there. Dodge's are decent too, I own a dakota and would never buy another one again though. My next truck will be a F-350 quad cab, all vinyl interior, regular size bed (if I can get a toolbox and my quad still in there). It also helps that I can get it under the A plan
sheerider4life
Get the Cummins....they are way better and sound better, just get a pipes kit and it is awsome....
lincster
You can't look at just the motor. You have to look at the size, ride etc. The Ford has the bigger crew cab. The cummins is an awesome motor, but the new 6.0L PSD is a good motor as well. I am on my 2nd Ford and will always own one. My toy hauler weighs 12,000lb going down the road and my truck pulls it great. The cummins would do just as good of a job. I had 47,000 miles on my 02 PSD, about 20,000 of that was towing, ran great the day I traded it in, only did normal maintenance. Test drive both and see which one you like. Ford has major changes coming on the super dutys for 05. Go to www.thedieselstop.com to get an idea. If you like leaf springs, you better get an 04 or older. sredish
I have a ranch and own a general contracting construction company. I tow something probably 3 to 5 days a week. Could be my 14k lbs. backhoe, my 40' flatbed with my pipe material on it (weighed at up to 26k lbs fully loaded) and anything else you could imagine. If you are going to tow, I highlly recommend getting a set of Air Ride airbags for the rear suspension, they will make towing a lot more comfortable and less bouncy, and you can totally adjust for different loads, all for only 4 bills. Also, I own a side business in hopping up diesel motors; exhaust, computer mods, turbos, intakes, and anything else you can think of. It's not a big company, but I try to stay pretty informed regarding diesel motors and trucks. I don't think there would be a bad choice given either PStroke or Cummins. I, myself, am a Ford guy. Partly for the motor and partly for the truck. I think the Powerstroke is a very good motor and very reliable, but the same could be said for the Cummins, as they are a very well proven motor in light trucks and semi trucks. Sure, being a Ford man, I could tell you, Powerstroke, don't get a Cummins and so on, but it's not true. I, personally, will never drive anything other than a Powerstroke, because that is what I like. I have driven Fords since I was 16. We have 4 Fords on this ranch. My last truck had 80k miles and was never once in the shop, my new truck has 16k and has never been in the shop. Nor has the other three vehicles EVER been in the shop for anything. I've know plenty that have, but I have been very fortunate. The 6.0 PStroke problem is long gone, it was a short 4 month issue that has been cleared up so don't worry about that. If I were you, I'd drive both vehicles and see what you feel is more comfortable and what appeals to you more overall and then compare the prices and make your decision based on price on features of the actual truck. If your weighing it on motor only, it'd be a 50/50 toss up. Good luck. Edited April 24, 2004 by sredish
Travis's Banshee
Rick: you know what I think. Check the diesel forums. There wan't much good said about the new 6.0 ford motor when it first came out. MY next personal truck will be another dodge. The last one was our construction rig. It was sold w/over 170k on it. It still never used a drop of oil between changes. The only time it was in the shop was to put the rear air bags in. It guess that doesn't really count, it was our shop it was in. Dune Ratt
I don't own a deisel but have been an avid Blue oval fan for years. The new 6.0L PSD while being very powerful have had a few problems since introduced. Mainly turbo and fuelmanagment problems. The cummins 600 in the new dodges though it breaks my heart to say this is by far the moter of choice until ford dials in the new heavy hitter. blk02banshee
I'm a GMC guy, but honestly, I say go for the ford. As far as NEW trucks go, the fords are very tough trucks.
txblueshee
My dad picked up an 04 3/4 powerstrokem w/ the new 6.0, fully loaded for 34,000... I've ridden in both the ford and the dodge super duty's.... I was more impressed by the ford. Both are kick ass trucks but i'm with sredish on this one... different strokes (no pun intended ) for different folks. Mike

BansheeJerry
International makes the power stoke diesel for ford. According to wards auto world ford has been having an aweful lot of warranty claims with the new power choke engines. So many warranty claims in fact that Ford is no longer going to have international make a v6 diesel for the explorer as planned. That job is going to cummins now I believe. IMO I would take a cummins over a powerchoke anyday. The older powerstrokes are really good engines from what I hear. My brother has a 93 dodge 1 ton 4x4 with a cummins and he has a little over 400,000 miles and has not even had to put an injector pump in it yet. If I were going to buy one I would def. go with dodge and cummins..
roosthrower
dodge is the only way to go for a diesel truck. cummins kicks ass and so does the 600ftlbs of torque the new dodge diesel makes.
