RV00GT Posted April 23, 2004 Report Share Posted April 23, 2004 I was eliminating my TORS today and everything was going fine, but when I went to tap the hole for the idle screw the tap broke off in the carb! You might be able to work the section of tap loose or break it out or something, but with my experience in aluminum, and taps that have galled up or siezed due to either the tap being dull, not enough cutting fluid, or I didn't back it out to relieve the chips, you're done. Posted April 24, 2004 Report Share Posted April 24, 2004 IF you can get the tap out without messing up the bore of the slide, and that's a BIG IF, the way I see it you have 2 options: 1) Fill the hole with metal epoxy, re-drill and tap. 2) Take the damaged carb and idle screw to a machine shop and asked them to turn you a new idle screw, one size bigger and drill and tap the carb to match. BrokeStonedBiker Posted April 24, 2004 Report Share Posted April 24, 2004 post a picture if you can. like cotton eyed joe said. breaking a tap in alumin is one of the hardest things to remove with out damaging much of the thread. was it a 2 3 or 4 prong tap? i dont know if "prong" is the proper name but, its the cutters on the tap. if its a 2 or a 4 you might be in luck. you would have to brows through sears or something to find some vise grips or locking plyers that will grip it and you might be able to shake it loose. im not to experience with that sort of thing. i dont do all that much taping at work. also a small pick and a hammer works some times putting the carb in a vise "carefully" and kinda tapping on the flanges of the tap on equal sides at a time, then using very small plyers. im sure you could also just buy a new carb if the worts comes to it. Then JB Weld the hole and retap or, better option, take to a machine shop and tap a size bigger for bigger idle screw like they said. Posted April 25, 2004 Report Share Posted April 25, 2004 If you're not up to doing any of the above suggestions, check to see if the pointy end of the tap is not protruding into the bore of the slide, if the slide can clear the f8#ked up hole and there are no burrs to interfere with the slide, just putty that hole up good and proper so no air leaks in. She won't idle too well, but you can still ride, alternatively, sync the carbs by adusting the slack in the cable at each carb top, once they are in sync, take up the slack at the throttle until she starts to idle. Rescuejeff Posted April 25, 2004 Report Share Posted April 25, 2004 I think the JBweld idea has a lot of merit, just need ti drill the tap first and place another turnable item in it before you let the JB weld harden so you can turn and pull the tap out. The stockers don't have idle screws on the carbs becuase they're incorporated with the TORS crap. If you upgrade carbs they'll be normal.
